The first National Television Awards was held in 1995 and has been held annually since. The awards’ location changed a couple of times from the Royal Albert Hall to the O2 Arena. This year the ceremony will be held at the OVO Arena Wembley. Last year’s host, Joel Dommett will return again, along with several previous winners.
Like After Life which won the Best Comedy award last year. Or Coronation Street which was the winner of the Best Serial Drama category. The NTA is the only award where only the public decide the winners. After anyone can select their favorite from the nominees on the event’s website until midday 15th of September. And follow the ceremony live next Thursday evening on ITV.
2022 National Television Awards Odds for Best Comedy Series
Laura Nunn’s comedy-drama series on Netflix, Sex Education is the top favorite of online sportsbooks in Ireland in the Best Comedy Series category. The series made its debut in 2019 and has three seasons now. It follows the lives of Otis Milburn, a high-school student, and his family and friends. As we can figure out, the series focuses on the topic of sex, as Otis sets up his own sex therapy clinic. Gillian Anderson plays his sex therapist mother brilliantly but all other cast members are great. Sex Education has been nominated in the last two years and has an odds of 1.68 to win it now.
The main challenger of it is last year’s winner, After Life, another Netflix series. It has a more sarcastic tone thanks to the main character, Tony Johnson’s behavior. Johnson, played by Ricky Gervais lost his wife due to breast cancer. He can’t deal with her loss so he tries to punish everyone and everything, often resulting in comic situations. The series’ odds to win again are 4.50.
Derry Girls has the same chances to win in the 2022 National Television Awards odds. The Channel 4 teen sitcom has already received two nominations for BAFTA. But this is its first nomination at the NTA. The fourth series in the category is Not Going Out, the second longest-running British sitcom. It’s in its 12th season with an odds of 6.00 to win the award.
Nominees in the Best Returning Drama category
There are two main favorites in the Best Returning Drama category: Peaky Blinders and Bridgerton. Both series have an odds of 2.00 for winning the award on online gambling sites in Ireland. The BBC crime drama set in Birmingham after the First World War, Peaky Blinders have been a huge hit all around the world.
It had its last season this year, which might bring another award for the series and its main actors. Like Cillian Murphy who is a nominee in the Best Drama Performance category. Peaky Blinders has already won several awards like the BAFTA Best Drama Series and the same category at the TV Choice Awards.
Its main rival is Bridgerton, one of the most popular series on Netflix. The period drama is set in the 19th century and tells the story of the eight siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family. Viewers loved the series, its second season became the most watched English-language TV series on Netflix.
So it can easily win the NTA award as well. The other two nominees, The Split and Call the Midwife have smaller chances of winning according to the bookmakers. The BBC legal drama has an odds of 8.50 to win with its final, third season. While BBC’s period drama about midwives working in the 1950s, and 60s has an odds of 11.00 to win its second NTA award.
