The final ATP 500 clay court event of the season is held this week, between the 18th and 24th of July in Hamburg. Pablo Carreno Busta is the defending champion, and he will try to win the tournament again. But the 2022 ATP Hamburg winner odds mention his compatriot, Carlos Alcaraz as the biggest favorite this year. Followed by the world No8 Andrey Rublev who has also won in the German city before.
The first edition of the German Open was held back in 1892, but in the first five years, it was only open to German and Austrian players. In the 20th century it became a Grand Prix Tennis Tour event, then a member of the ATP Masters Series. It was downgraded to an ATP 500 tournament in 2009 which also meant that top players often skipped the event.
Especially as it is played on clay courts, while most of them focus on the hard surface ahead of the US Open. Still, we can see some of the best players in the former winners of the tournament. Like Roger Federer who has the most wins with four victories. Or Rafael Nadal who won here twice. Another Spanish player, Pablo Carreno Busta is the defending champion who will try to defend his title this week.
2022 ATP Hamburg Winner Odds Mention Alcaraz and Rublev as the Top Favorites
Carlos Alcaraz has been stunning on clay court this season after winning two tournaments on this surface. The ATP 1000 Masters in Madrid and an ATP 500 event in Barcelona. He also reached the quarter-finals at the French Open which was his second Grand Slam quarter-final after the 2021 US Open.
The following months haven’t been as successful though due to injuries. The 19-year-old Spanish got to the fourth round in Wimbledon where he lost against Italian Jannik Sinner. Now he is back on his strongest surface though so online sportsbooks in Germany offer the smallest odds, 1.69 for his victory.
His main rival can be Andrey Rublev who follows Alcaraz in the 2022 ATP Hamburg winner odds. The Russian has already won in Hamburg once before, in 2020. And he has also won three titles this season including one on clay. The world No8 also reached the quarter-finals in Paris and in Madrid too. But he had to miss Wimbledon after the ban on all Russian and Belarusian players. Rublev returned to the ATP Tour last week in Sweden where he got to the semi-finals. Now his odds to go all the way and win his second trophy here are 7.10.
Previous Tournament Winners and Other Favorites
Diego Schwartzman has reached the finals in Rio and Buenos Aires this year, both were clay tournaments. He also reached the quarter-final in Monte-Carlo and the semi-final in Barcelona. So, the Argentine player had a few good results on this surface. The world No14 also played in Sweden but lost against Carreno Busta in the quarter-final.
Schwartzman’s best result in Hamburg has been a quarter-final in 2018, his odds to win it now are 13.00. Pablo Carreno Busta won the event last year and is also mentioned by online gambling sites in Germany among the favorites.
The Spanish world No23 got to the final of the 2022 Barcelona Open where Alcaraz beat him. It was the 31-year-old player’s best result this season besides reaching the semi-final in Sweden last week. He can meet a tough opponent in Karen Khachanov in the second round.
The Russian will start against the German favorite, Jan-Lennard Struff in one of the top games of the first round. With similar odds being offered for both players’ win. While the two-time winner of this tournament, Nikoloz Basilashvili will play against another Russian player, Aslan Karatsev in the opening round. The Georgian player has one final this season and the odds of 50.00 to win in Hamburg now.
