  • 2021 Giro d’Italia starts this Saturday, 8th of May
  • First stage is an individual time trial in Turin
  • Filippo Ganna is the top favorite ahead of Remco Evenepoel and Remi Cavagna

Only three days are left until the beginning of this year’s Giro d’Italia, the first Grand Tour of the season. Where several top cyclists including Egan Bernal and Simon Yates will compete along with the best sprinters and time trial specialists. Like Filippo Ganna, who is the top favorite to win on Saturday according to the 2021 Giro first stage odds.

One of the most expected events of the cycling season, the 2021 Giro d’Italia will begin this weekend, on the 8th of May. We’ve already collected the main favorites for the pink jersey. But now we take a look for the best time trial cyclists. As the first stage on Saturday, the 8th of May will be a relatively easy time trial over 8,6km in Turin. Cyclists will start from Piazza Castello, then ride along the river Po to finish near the church of Gran Madre di Dio. In the entirely flat route big, powerful riders can perform well. Like the local favorite, Filippo Ganna. Who also won all three time trial stages in the 2020 Giro d’Italia. But there will be other great riders who can also go fast on the streets of Turin.

Online sportsbooks in Italy offer the smallest odds, 2.00 for the victory of Filippo Ganna on the first day. The Ineos rider is the current time trial world champion. Plus the winner of all time trial stages of the previous Giro. This season the Italian hasn’t got much results but he still won the time trial in the UEA Tour in February. He finished third in the ITT stage in the Tirreno-Adriatico and 10th in the Tour de Romandie. Now Ganna can prove his talent again and get the maglia rosa after the first stage.

One of his main rivals can be Remco Evenepoel, the 2019 European Time Trial champion and silver medalist in the 2019 World Championships. The Belgian cyclist has defeated Ganna in both occasions but this will be his first appearance in a Grand Tour. The 21-year-old Quick-Step rider hasn’t raced at all since last August when he broke his pelvis. It will be interesting to see how he can get back to racing on top level. His odds to start with a stage win is 3.74. While Evenepoel’s teammate, Remi Cavagna has the odds of 3.24 to be the fastest in the 2021 Giro first stage odds. The French cyclist won the ITT stage at the 2021 Tour de Romandie. And he was second at the time trial stage of the 2021 Paris-Nice.  He is hoping for a similar result now in his second Giro d’Italia.

Other riders who can win the stage

Online gambling sites in Italy also mention Victor Campenaerts in the favorites to win the first stage with the odds of 9.80. The bronze medalist of the 2020 European Road Championships has taken part in most of the one-day classics this season. He got his best result in the 2021 Brabantse Pijl where he finished 17th. But the Belgian rider also finished second in the last time trial stage of the 2020 Giro. Which can be a promising sign before his 7th Grand Tour.

While Portuguese Joao Almeida has the odds of 18.00 to win his first stage in a Grand Tour. The 22-year-old Quick-Step rider was wearing the pink jersey for 15 days in his first Giro appearance last year, and finished 4th at the end. Almeida can also fight for the overall victory this time. Now a good performance on the first stage could give him some confidence ahead of the tougher stages. Just like he did last year when he finished second behind Ganna.
