In the Best First Feature category Regina King and Darius Marder are the favorites
The 73rd Directors Guild of America Awards is held next Saturday, on the 10th of April online. Only registered members will be able to view it. But you can still make a bet on the winners of the main categories like the Best Feature one where Nomadland is the favorite. While 2021 DAG Best First Feature odds predict a tighter race between the top two nominees of the category.
In the film awards season probably the Directors Guild of America Awards is not as famous as the others, but winning it is still a huge achievement. In the previous winners of the main award we can find the best directors from Steven Spielberg to Martin Scorsese. It is a good sign to be awarded here as 15 of the last 17 winners of the DGA award also won the Oscar after. The guild has been rewarding the best first time directors since 2015 so this is a relatively new category. Still, it also has a great list of the previous winners including Get Out director Jordan Peele and Lion director Garth Davis. This year we can also find two women nominees in the category with great chances to win the award.
2021 DAG Best First Feature odds offer similar odds for top two favorites
Regina King has been more known as an actress so far but it can all change now. As she directed the film One Night in Miami which has already received several awards and nominations. Now online sportsbooks in the US favor her to win here with the odds of 2.00. Her film is about a fictionalized night in 1964 with Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke meeting in a hotel. King debuted with the film in the Venice Film Festival last September. She has become the first African-American female director to do so. Critics and fans liked her work which also earned a Best Director Golden Globe nomination.
Her biggest rival according to the 2021 DAG Best First Feature odds is Darius Marder, the director of Sound of Metal. Which got six nominations at the Academy Awards including the Best Picture category. The drama tells the story of a metal drummer played by Riz Ahmed who loses his hearing. Since its debut in the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival the film has received great reviews from the critics. It has also won several awards like the Best Director award from the Hollywood Critics Association. Not a bad debut from the former screenwriter and editor who has the odds of 2.20 to win at the DAG as well.
Other nominees who can also win in the category
Florian Zeller’s directorial debut, The Father is also mentioned in the favorites by online gambling sites in the US. The French novelist and playwright directed the film with a superb cast including Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. The drama also received six nominations at the Academy Awards and at the BAFTA. And it has already won the Best European Film award at the Goya Awards. While Zeller won the Best New Filmmaker award from the Boston Society of Film Critics.
We also have to mention the other female director in the nominees. Radha Blank who made the comedy, The 40-Year-Old Version. The film is based on Blank’s life and it is about a playwright and teacher who turns into rapping when she gets close to 40. What makes it even more special is that the director also plays the main character, Radha in the film. Blank’s production debuted in the Sundance Film Festival last year where it won the US Dramatic Competition Directing Award. Now she has the odds of 11.00 for another victory.
