2020 Milan-San Remo Bets: Which Favorite Will Be the Winner?

Though it might seem to be far away at the beginning of December, cyclists have already started to train for the next season. One of the earliest races will be a real classic, the Milan-San Remo one day race on the 21st of March 2020. Last year French Julian Alaphilippe was the winner and in the 2020 Milan-San Remo bets, he is the favorite again. 

It will be the 111th edition of this historic race,  which was first organized in 1907. Then 33 riders were at the start of the race but only 14 managed to complete the long-distance of 286 km. The toughest race was probably in 1910 when a snowstorm was making cycling almost impossible. It ended with French Eugene Christophe’s victory, who managed to win this heroic race in 12 hours 24 minutes. Legendary Eddie Merckx has won Milan-San Remo the most times with 7 victories. In recent years Eric Zabel was the most successful with four wins and two second-places. Thanks to its history, it is an honor to win this race, let’s see the main favorites for 2020. 

In the 2020 Milan-San Remo bets Alaphilippe and Sagan are head-to-head

Online sportsbooks in Italy are giving the most chance for reigning champion Julian Alaphilippe to win the race again. The Frenchman is a master of one-day races as he has already won four different ones. On top of these results, he won the polka dot jersey on the Tour de France in 2018. So Alaphilippe is the king of the mountains which is useful to tackle the climbs in the route. The most famous climb of the race, Poggio di Sanremo has also helped him to win the race last year. His odds to defend his title is 6.50 at Unibet.

But he has to face other big names like Peter Sagan, who will try to win the race for the first time in his career. He is a three-time world road race champion and multiple winners of other prestigious one day races like the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. Probably the Slovakian is most famous for his stage wins at the Tour de France.  He managed to get 12 individual stage victories. Thanks to all his wins he had the green jersey six times, which is an amazing performance from one of the world’s best sprinters. His odds are 7.00.

Who else can win the race?  

There are still famous names mentioned by online gambling sites in Italy who can laugh at the end. One of them is local favorite Elia Viviani, who has the odds of 8.00 for winning the race. Viviani has won the points classification in Giro D’Italia in 2018 and the Tour of Dubai. He also has stage victories in all Grand Tours including a stage win at the Tour de France this year. The Italian crossed the finish line first at the 2019 European Road Championship, so plenty of successes near his name. But his biggest weapon can be his knowledge about the area, as he was born not far from Milan, in Verona. 

The 2020 San Remo bets are also ranking a young Dutch cyclist, Mathieu van der Poel in the top five favorites with the same odds, 8.00. Mathieu is only 24, but he is already a two-time world champion in cyclo-cross, which is a technical race held in a hilly and demanding circuit. Mathieu comes from a cycling family, with his brother, father, and even his grand-father having race victories in both road cycling and cyclo-cross. Now he seems to continue the family heritage as he has won the Tour of Britain this year and a few one-day races like the Amstel Gold Race in the Netherlands. 

Finally, we can mention another youngster, Australian Caleb Ewan who is a sprinter like Sagan. He has also won individual stages in all three Grand Tours, with three stage wins this year in both the Tour de France and Giro. Besides, he finished second in the 2018 Milan-San Remo race, which could fuel him to win this time. His odds are 8.50 at Unibet.
