2020 Indy500 Betting Preview: Series Leader Dixon Is the Biggest Favourite

One of the most famous car races in the world is in Indianapolis, the Indy500 is part of the American Championship Car racing, the IndyCar series. Though the event is held a few months later and without spectators, it is still in the focus of most motor sport fans. Let’s see the main favourites according to the 2020 Indy500 betting preview. 

The first race in Indianapolis was held in 1911, this will be the 104th race in the legendary track nicknamed Brickyard. 33 drivers will take part in the race where they have to take 500 miles, so 200 laps. Simon Pagenaud is last year’s winner who will start from only the 25th place this time. American Marco Andretti, the grandson of the 1969 Indy500 winner Mario Andretti will start from the pole position. The series leader Scott Dixon starts next to him from the first row, so we should see some exciting moves already at the beginning.

Online sportsbooks in the US like BetOnline favours New Zealander Scott Dixon to win the race. As we mentioned he is leading the championship 49 points ahead of 2nd-place Simon Pagenaud. But the French had a rubbish qualification so Dixon can easily increase his lead. He has already won three races this season, including the Indianapolis GP in July. So the five-time series’ winner has good experience from the track. Especially as he also won the race in 2008 starting from pole position like now.

One of his biggest rivals can be American driver Alexander Rossi, who starts from 9th place. The Andretti Autosport driver has also won the race earlier, in 2016 as a rookie driver. Rossi is usually performing well in this track following a 4th and 2nd-place finish so he can have shown another great performance here. Which would be crucial to save his season as he is only 10th place in the drivers’ standing. It should be disappointing for his fans after he finished as a runner-up last season.

Can another Andretti win the race?

The youngest member of the legendary Andretti family, Marco Andretti managed to win the qualification weekend, and can start from pole position. The 33-year-old driver is the son of former IndyCar series winner Michael Andretti. While his grandson, Mario Andretti  was also a  fantastic driver winning even a Formula 1 championship in 1978. Marco is the latest talent in the family, though he hasn’t achieved such successes so far. This is the first time he will start from pole in Indianapolis and surely aim for his third victory in the series. BetOnline also mentions him in the favourites in the 2020 Indy500 betting preview.

While last season’s winner Simon Pagenaud only starts from the 9th place, he can still move forward during the long race. The French is currently in 2nd place in the championship, so should really get closer to Dixon if he still wants to stay in the race for the title. Many fans and members of the F1 Renault team will follow the performance of Fernando Alonso, who is taking part in the race for the third time. The Spanish F1 champion hasn’t been too successful yet. He finished 24th on his first attempt in 2017 and couldn’t qualify last year due to a technical error. This year he will start from 26th place which might be his last drive in the series.
