The awards will honor the best independent filmmakers in 10 categories. The 2020 Gotham Awards Best Feature odds favor Chloe Zhao’s new film, Nomadland to win. Let’s see its odds and the other favorites.
After the announcement of the nominees in all 10 categories on the 12th of November, IFP members can watch the films in December on virtual screenings. Who can then select their favorites in all categories including Best Feature and Best Documentary. Tribute awards will also be awarded to actors Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis, director Steve McQueen and writer Ryan Murphy. In the previous winners of the Best Feature category we can find the Marriage Story from last year. But future Oscar winners as well like Spotlight, Moonlight or Call Me by Your Name. We have five great films this season as well to compete for the awards.
2020 Gotham Awards Best Feature odds favor Nomadland
Online sportsbooks in the US offer the smallest odds, 1.50 for the victory of Chloe Zhao’s drama, Nomadland. The film is about a woman who goes on a journey in the American West after losing everything in the Great Recession. It features two-time Academy Awards winner Frances McDormand and Academy Award nominee David Strathairn. They are both brilliant but the film’s biggest strength is the director, Chloe Zhao. She is the director of previous winner The Rider. While her debut film, Songs My Brother Taught Me was a nominee at Cannes. Her third film, Nomadland has already won the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival and the top prize at the Venice Film Festival.
The biggest rival of this drama can be First Cow, which is also directed by a woman, Kelly Reichardt. The film tells the story of the meeting and future collaboration of a chef and a Chinese immigrant whilst on a run from a band of hunters in the 1820s. The film stars John Magaro, Orion Lee, Toby Jones and Lily Gladstone. It competed for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and won the Best Film award at the 2020 New York Film Critics Circle Awards. Now First Cow has the odds of 2.70 to win according to the 2020 Gotham Awards Best Feature odds.
Other nominees
We can also find in the nominees another drama directed by Eliza Hittman, Never Rarely Sometimes Always. It stars Sidney Flanigan and Talia Ryder and tells the story of 17-year old Autumn who got pregnant. She goes on a journey to New York with her cousin, Skylar to get an abortion. Not an easy theme, but it has already won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at Berlin and received great critics. Online gambling sites in the US offer the odds of 11.00 for its victory.
While another drama in the category is The Assistant which might be the first film about the #MeToo movement. It also has a woman director, Kitty Green and stars Julia Garner, Matthew Macfayden and Makenzie Leigh. The film is about a junior assistant who is working for a film production company where sexual harassment is part of everyday’s life. The Assistant also received great reviews from critics and viewers, but has a smaller chance to win here.
