Bookies believe that Leeds United are the absolute favourites to win the Championship this season. However, Bielsa’s side seriously lacks squad depth, and clubs like Fulham and West Brom could definitely ruin their dreams of promotion. We took a closer look at the 2020 English Championship winner betting odds and made our predictions for the next season…
The English Football League Championship is the second-highest division in England. The first and the second finishing clubs gain automatic promotion to the Premier League, while the 3-6th teams can participate in the play-offs. The winner of the mini-tournament gets promoted as well. The three worst finishing teams are going to be relegated to League One.
Leeds are the favourites in spite of their disappointing summer
Leeds United finished 3rd last season, which meant they had to participate in the play-offs in order to get promoted. Their fans were confident, but they still lost to Derby County in the semi-finals. Leeds are giving it a go again, and most of the online sportsbook sites in the UK believe they could actually win the Championship.
While many expected big-money signings from the Whites, they didn’t spend a quid in the transfer market this summer. Though they did try to strengthen their team with a couple of loan deals, they also lost 7 players. It seems there’s a lack of squad depth at Leeds United, but manager Marco Bielsa isn’t too concerned about it.
“I have a lot of confidence with the squad that I have at the moment,” he said. “We have three players for each position. Even though there are not 33 players, we have 18 players that are good enough to play in three positions differently.” – Marco Bielsa
Although the manager is pretty confident about the number of his players, a few injuries could cause him a serious headache this season. While the football they play is quite entertaining, and historically Leeds do belong to the Premier League, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Peacocks take a step back this year and finish lower than they did in April.
Fulham are expected to perform well, the real surprise could come from West Brom
Following their disappointing relegation from the Premier League, Fulham also had to let their most valuable player go. Though they’ve lost a real talent, Ryan Sessegnon, they managed to get Anthony Knockaert on loan, who’s been terrific in the Championship a few years ago. Bet365 Sportsbook believes that the London team could get themselves together and finish in the top two without a problem.
However, we believe you should pay a lot more attention to West Bromwich Albion instead. The West-Midlands club finished 4th last season, but lost to Aston Villa in the semi-finals of the play-offs. WBA could mean a real threat to everyone this year, as his team is getting stronger and hungrier – ready for the Premier League. Though they lost Rondon, Rodriguez and Dawson they managed to recruit five players and get four others on loan. The list of new players includes Kenneth Zohore, Charlie Austin and Romaine Sawyers.
Though they did spend millions on new players this summer, West Brom’s biggest signing came on a free transfer: Slaven Bilic. The Croatian manager spent two exciting years with West Ham United, his former club, then got the sack after finishing 14th in the Premier League. He worked in Saudi Arabia last year, and now returned to England to lead WBA back to the highest level. We definitely believe in his qualities and we’re sure there’s a lot to come from his team.
English Championship Winner Betting Odds: Bristol, Cardiff and Brentford could fight for playoffs
Bet365 argues it’s much less likely for Bristol, Cardiff and Brentford to win the league this season. However, they expect these teams to reach one of the top6 positions, which is lot more realistic goal for them. Bristol City were especially active in the transfer market, they signed 9 players and loaned another 3. Their fans have high hopes for a reason, but we argue that Leeds, West Brom and Fulham are going to compete for the first spot.
After we took a look at the English Championship winner betting odds, we believe that West Brom is definitely the most reasonable choice to bet on. Their odds at Bet365 are still relatively good, while they’re amongst the absolute favourites for sure. While Leeds and Fulham could be relatively wise choices as well, a successful bet on WBA can be the most profitable, and they’re at least as likely to win the league as the other two.
