Primeira Liga is the first division of the Portugese football league system. It takes place annually between August and May. Only five teams managed to win the title so far, including the three giants. These are Porto, Benfica and Sporting. The champions are automatically qualify for the Champions League, the runner-ups place get a place in the play-offs. The 3rd and 4th teams can try their luck in the Europa League, the latter has to play a qualification round.
It’s always hard to bet on such an unpredictable league as the Portugese one. However, we have a betting site to count on. According to our latest review about Bet365 Sportsbook, they’ve got the most sensible odds when it comes to Portugese football. Based on their numbers and our own experiences and data we’ve made our Primeira Liga Winner Predictions for 2019.
Porto’s great defence could be the key for the title
Bet365 Sportsbook believes that FC Porto are the absolute favorites to win the Primeira Liga this year. One of the reasons behind this is their incredible defence. Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas has only conceded 11 goals in his 18 league games. He’s managed to keep 10 clean sheets which is also a great number.
Casillas has the support of his defensive line, which was also strengthened lately with Pepe’s arrival. They’ve scored the most goals in the league too. Their Brazilian forward, the 28 years old Tiquinho Soares is on fire, but Marega and Brahimi are also performing well. They have everything to win the title this year, however, there are some other great clubs in the country as well.
The goals of Seferovic mean hope for Benfica
Benfica could be Porto’s biggest rivals this year. They were really close to the top for a while until their 1-3 defeat at home against the league leaders. They’re still contending and online sportsbook sites in Portugal argue that their situation is not hopeless at all.
They’ve managed to score as much goals as Porto this season. Their key man up front is definitely the Swiss international Haris Seferovic. If he can keep his good run and Porto slips, Benfica are back in the competition again.
Braga are getting better each year
The great season of Braga could surprise many football fans. However, this club has the potential to become as huge as the big three in the future. They’ve been building their team wisely, reaching better positions each year.
Braga have finished their season in the 4th place last year. They have a chance to finish even higher in May. Their defeats to Sporting and Benfica surely didn’t help their season, but they’ve been picking up points against the smaller sides. We have to mention their top striker, Dyego Sousa, who’s having a great couple of months. The Brazilian striker has scored the most goals in the competition so far (12). He is one of the favourites according to our 2019 Primeira Liga top scorer predictions as well.
Inconsistency could cost the title for Sporting
Cristiano Ronaldo’s boyhood club hasn’t been performing well this year. Of course we’re not saying that they’re not a team to keep our eyes on. They played really well when they’ve managed to drew with Porto and beaten Guimaraes. However, against the smaller sides they haven’t been so convincing.
Losing against Tondela who were playing with 10 men in the second half is not something to be proud of. Consistency is the key to progress, and if you want to be champions, these games that you must win. Some still believe in their revival, while Bet365 Sportsbook expects them to finish above Braga. This time, we’re a bit pessimistic about them, but they’ll might prove us wrong.
