The 2019 ceremony will take place on September 19 at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, London. This will be the 28th edition if happening. The prize promotes music regardless of genre
The first ever Mercury Prize took place in 1992. That year the iconic Primal Scream took the prize for their album ‘Screamadelica’. Actually, the prize has no categories. More importantly, the event is open to all genres of music. Annually, there are 12 shortlisted musicians who receive the ‘Albums of the Year’ trophy. However, the overall winner also takes a cash prize of £25,000.

The judges decide based solely on the quality of the music
Obviously, winning the prize significantly increases the public awareness of all the shortlisted artist. Not to mention the winning album. An independent panel of judges selects the shortlist after listening to the albums that have been entered over many months. The judging panel usually includes musicians, music journalists, music presenters, and music producers.
Every year the UK music industry enters around 220 albums. These albums can be from well-established artists to newcomers, as well as emerging ones.
Two rappers have extremely high chances of winning the prize
Over the last four years, South London rapper Dave has become from an unknown 16-year-old rap sensation to a platinum-selling artist. His works are lyrical and technical, clever and moving at the same time.
Slowthai or Tyron Kaymone Frampton is another English rapper from Northampton. He probably doesn’t even need an introduction. He’s released 12 singles already. Also, the 60,000 followers on Instagram speak for itself. The rapper’s stage name was born out of the nickname “Slow Ty,” which his friends called him to mock his slow speech.
Rock bands are favored by many this year
Foals was formed in 2005 in Oxford. The group has won a number of awards, and they just released their fifth album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 1 on 8 March. Quite successful, the album was the BBC 6 Music Album of the Day right after its release.
Neither fat nor a family, the Fat White Family released their debut album Champagne Holocaust, in 2013, on UK label Trashmouth Records. They are playing straightforward and genuine rock’n’roll. Many consider them the most exciting to come out of the country in the last few years.
Clinic is another well-known band in the English rock scene. Formed in 1997 in Liverpool, they are noted for their use of vintage keyboards/organs. On the other hand, they are also wearing surgical masks on stage sometimes. The band is wearing different costumes depending on the circumstances of the show, so there is a strong visual side of everything they do.
Songwriters are going for the prize
Many would find Soak’s music extremely mournful. The 19-year-old indie-folk prodigy is one of the most talented artists out there. Soak released her debut album in 2015 Before We Forgot How To Dream full of emotive folk songs. The same album won the Irish Choice Music Prize Album of the Year 2015.
Another extremely talented young singer, songwriter, the performer is Jade Bird. Besides her special, strong voice, she is also playing the guitar and piano. In the year of 2017, she opened for First Aid Kit, Son Little and London Grammar. In the same year, the singer won the ANCHOR 2017 award in Hamburg. Eventually, in 2019, she released her very successful, self-titled debut album.
