  • First edition of Ostrava Open is held this week in the Czech Republic
  • The indoor hard court tournament is replacing cancelled events
  • Victoria Azarenka and Karolina Pliskova are the main favorites

The Premier level Ostrava Open is held this week, between the 19th and 25th of October. This is the first edition of the event following the cancellation of other tournaments. But it still managed to attract several top players to take part in it. In  the WTA Ostrava winner odds Azarenka and Pliskova are the main favorites. Let’s see their chances now.

The first Czech indoor tournament for professional female players was held in 1999, under the name of Nokia Cup in the city of Prostejov. Now the tournament moved to Ostrava, but it’s still played indoor on hard courts. It is replacing other tournaments which have been cancelled this year. After the qualifying rounds, 24 players started in the first round yesterday. While 8 top seed players will only join them in the second round. As this is the first edition of the tournament, there is no defending champion, but we can still name the main favorites according to their odds and recent forms.

WTA Ostrava winner odds mention Czech player in the favorites

Online sportsbooks in the Czech Republic offer the same odds, 6.00 for the victory of two players, Victoria Azarenka and Karolina Pliskova. Azarenka is in great form this season after reaching the final of the 2020 US Open. She also got to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open after that. Even though she was knocked out early from the French Open, she is seeded 4th in the Ostrava Open. The Belarusian will play against hometown favorite Barbora Krejcikova in her first game.  The Czech player advanced to the second round after three wins in the qualifying and first rounds.

Let’s play!

Karolina Pliskova is the No2 seed at the tournament, but she has had a mixed season so far. She defended her title in the Brisbane International at the beginning of the year. While she got only to the third round in the Australian Open. In the tournaments after the break, like the Western and Southern Open and the US Open, Pliskova only reached  the second rounds. She is still No4 in the world ranking but needs a better performance now to keep her position.  She will face the winner of the Donna Vekic vs Veronika Kudermetova match in the second round.

The top seed of the tournament only ranked fourth by bookmakers

Interestingly the top seed of the tournament, Elina Svitolina has slightly worse odds (7.00) in the WTA Ostrava winner odds. The Ukrainian player is currently 5th in the world ranking after winning in Strasbourg and reaching the quarter-finals in the French Open. But she is facing a tough opponent already in her first game where she will meet World No21 Maria Sakkari. The 23-year old Greek player managed to defeat Serena Williams in the Western and Southern Open this summer and also won against Svitolina in their last meeting.

Online gambling sites in the Czech Republic also mention another Belarusian player, Aryna Sabalenka in the favorites. She has the odds of 6.50 on 1xBet to win her 7th WTA singles title. Sabalenka is out of the top 10 in the world ranking at the moment after a less successful season so far. But now she will have another chance to improve on her record. She will face the winner of the Katarina Siniakova vs Cori Gauff game where the young American is the favorite.
