Roulette is probably one of the most well-known casino games. Everyone is familiar with the roulette wheel, and many gambling enthusiasts have played it at least once in their life. However, not everyone knows that there are two main types of roulette - American and European. Each type has its own features, so let’s take a closer look at European and American roulette wheels.

European vs. American roulette wheel

European roulette is considered to be a traditional version of the game. It has 18 black numbers, 18 red numbers, and a zero pocket. The house edge in the European roulette is 2.7%, which makes the game quite attractive for players.

So, what is the difference between these two types? Well, the American roulette wheel has an additional pocket – double 0. While the European version has 37 pockets, American roulette has 38 pockets. This also increases the house edge from 2.7% to 5.26%. Although it might not sound important but the additional pocket directly affects your chances of winning.

Both European and American roulettes have similar payouts – 35 to 1. However, odds of winning American roulette are 1 in 38, which means that you’ll win less often. Therefore, the European roulette wheel is always a better choice. Some people might think that the difference is insufficient, but let’s take a look at your chances of winning on both wheels

Does it affect your chances of winning?

The game of roulette offers a huge variety of different bets. You can simply place your bet on a certain number. But it is also possible to bet on reds or blacks, odds or evens, and lows or highs. However, the chances of winning in American roulette are still lower. For example, if you bet on reds, chances of winning in European roulette are 48.65%. At the same time, the American wheel will give you a 47.37% chance of winning. The same situation appears if you bet on lows or highs and odds or evens.
