In a world of fast breaking news stories it can be all too easy to miss something important so just in case you did we quickly review some of the salient news stories of last week.
In the United States two tragedies befell two very different communities last week. In New York Uzbek immigrant Sayfullo Saipov drove a truck into cyclists on a cycle-path in Manhattan killing eight people including five Argentinians and a Belgian in an Islamic State inspired attack. Later in the week Devin Patrick Kelley, a 26 year old recently court marshaled from the US Air Force, entered a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and shot dead 27 people and injured another 20 or more.
In Spain the Madrid government issued an EU-wide arrest warrant for the leaders of the Catalan independence movement including former leader Carles Puigdemont. He and four former ministers reported to Belgian police who released them pending investigation. The Catalans refused to return to Spain until they are guaranteed a fair trial in face of the charges of Rebellion, Sedition and misuse of public funds ranged against them following the independence referendum held in the region recently.
In the US former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and business associate Rick Gates were each charged with twelve counts of money laundering, undisclosed foreign lobbying, and misleading government investigators. A third man, George Papadopoulous was also charged with lying to FBI investigators working for Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, but surprisingly plead guilty perhaps indicating he was cooperating with investigators prior to the Manafort & Gates indictments.
In sports it was Gun Runner who cruised to a comfortable win in the Breeders Cup Classic against a world class field and take the $6m prize, with Collected coming second and West Coast third leaving last year’s winner, Arrogate to come fifth alongside Gunnevera having suffered a slow start. The question is what’s next for this amazing horse and Florent Geroux the jockey atop him? You’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out, but in the meantime here’s some of the big stories of last week.

Meanwhile the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists was called in to assist Suddenutsche Zeitung who, similarly to the case of the Panama Papers, had obtained a massive leak of documents pertaining to the off-shore investments of the very rich and powerful last week. The so called Paradise Papers included details of off-shore investments made by the The Queen and the links between members of Trump’s cabinet, particularly Wilbur Ross, and Russian business interests.
