They’ve not, if they’re honest, played as well as they could have. New Zealand have slipped to a 2-0 deficit against visitors India. Indeed the T20 odds on New Zealand against India are now all but embarrassing. They could come back and win the next three matches, of course. It’s just online sportsbook sites in New Zealand like Unibet don’t believe it. Nor should you. India have come, seen and, thus far, conquered and they’ll very probably continue to do so. So what happened?

“It was a tough day.” Admitted Kane Williamson, Kiwi Captain, after their second T20 loss in a row to India. “The wicket was quite different from the first game. As a batting unit we needed probably another 15-20 runs for a competitive total.” Which ignores that India won by 7 wickets with balls to spare. The T20 odds on New Zealand against India don’t. At 14/1 the bookies barely give them a hope. Given their somewhat wayward total, at the crease this isn’t really surprising.

Williamson himself was caught for just 14, both openers having fallen for fifty nine between them. More than anything, the T20 odds on New Zealand against India reflect this poor performance. Their second so far. India have simply taken the Kiwi batting order to pieces. “Credit to the Indian blowers for the way they restricted us.” Kane agreed, in tones that don’t encourage anyone to take advantage of New Zealand gambling laws and back the hosts.

India are, let’s face it, a better side. Unsurprising given they’ve a population of 1.3 billion, versus New Zealand’s 4.7 million. They now get 7/2 to win the T20 World Cup with only Australia, the hosts, better placed. The Kiwi side was never going to have an easy time of it. Not even at home. The T20 odds on New Zealand against India then are harsh, but fair. They’d need a miracle. It’s so bad, moreover, that India going home with a 5-0 clean sweep is just 9/4 at Unibet right now.

“We need to bat a little better perhaps.” Kane Williamson said as if it had only just occurred to him. “That’s something we would like to do.” Which won’t give those who like to bet on sports in New Zealand much confidence. “We needed to take a couple of wickets on the sluggish wicket.” He mused. “We need to be better in the next match.” Which is so obvious it’s painful. Just look at the T20 odds on New Zealand against India. They need to salvage some dignity.

“They showed the experience and took the game deeper.” Said a somewhat besieged Kane, “They were clinical.” And that’s true. Virat Kohli and Co should be worrying the Australians right now with their play. New Zealand aren’t scaring anyone. “We need to keep moving forward as a group.” Kane rallied, “That’s the great thing. As we’re up against a tough side like India, we get to test ourselves against the best.” Which was a neat boundary in a press conference of singles.

The T20 odds on New Zealand against India thus aren’t very tempting. A bet on New Zealand is probably a hiding to nothing. A bet on India an odd risk at such short prices. To bet on T20 cricket shouldn’t be so dull. Online betting sites in New Zealand like Unibet will, of course, give you 7/1 on New Zealand in the T20 World Cup, but that’s a bit strange too. Those are long T20 Cricket odds for the Black Caps. Even England get 9/2. They just have too much to do, and nowhere near enough time.
