Today we are going to give you a brief introduction to the history of inclusivity in sports. Instead of making a timeline, we are going to present you with all of the categories that might involve inclusion. There are many things people might bring up, but generally, we consider the following categories into inclusion:

  • Gender, Sexuality, Identity
  • Disability, Mental Health
  • Ethnicity, Socioeconomic status, religion, age

These are the factors that are to be debated when it comes to including everyone, and we will reflect upon the history and current status of each. Let’s accept everyone for who they are, and make peace in the world, or at the very least, sports. Female Empowerment – The History Of Inclusivity In Sports

At the beginning of sports in Greece, women were not allowed to participate in the ancient Olympics. In other places, we have remnants of Egyptian art where we may see women participating in athletics and ball games. We have come a long way since that. The first few motions were the “All Female Cricket”-team in England. In 1900, the Paris Olympics first introduced a limited number of games deemed appropriate for women.

In 1921 Monaco expanded this list, and finally, in 1974 the first US organization was created to allow all sports for women, with the inclusion finalizing in 2004. Many women had to fight blood, sweat, and tears to enable sports for women. Nowadays, we even had the first female LoL team a few years ago, which is a sign for us that finally we achieved gender equality, even if economic interest is still questionable. Hitler At The Olympics – A Clown’s Fall

Unfortunately, people of color were always at a disadvantage in our history. The debate on ethnicity and skin color took a long time for humans to go through. Many evil politicians used the uncertainty of science to try and create hate for a given ethnic group, amassing followers by redirecting hate.

One of the most glorious Olympic moments was when Hitler brought his militia to the Olympics, yet black people won. He kept yapping about it, and his militaristic show and weird philosophy felt annoying for even his followers, marking his fall. We saw Lewis Hamilton rising to the top, despite the racist F1 fans, and since then we have seen many endorsing the history of inclusivity in sports. Nowadays, we have people of color even from other ethnicities, like Shohei Ohtani who is currently the most celebrated baseball star around the world!

LGBTQ+ – The History Of Inclusivity In Sports

Love is love, and this can not be changed by anyone. Unfortunately, when one type of hate falls, the other gets created. Many blame religion, but to be truthful? It is not religion, but rather those who emphasize and misinterpret questionable historical remnants related to history. Those who want power will want to create a division, and many times, LGBTQ people were targeted for this division. Alienated from sports, and shamed for who they were even if they were successful, this caused much pain for athletes.

Only very recently we have started to appreciate LGBTQ Athletes. It is relaxing to see that people are now celebrating a female athlete when she walks in with her female partner, and the same goes for males. Transgender presence is still debated, yet it seems even trans people tend to agree that as long as the transition happens before puberty, they can fairly participate. Essentially, biology for division rules is a real factor, and most people seem to agree.

Paralympics – Everyone Is Worthy

The history of the Paralympics was not too linear, as we already had moments during the history of inclusivity in sports when people considered disabled beat people who were considered healthy. These glorious moments inspired doctors from all over the world. Dr. Ludwig Guttmann in 1950 believed in the therapeutic power of sports for people with spinal injuries.

According to the Studio Republic, he created the Paralympics first for veterans with spinal injuries. This movement grew out as one of the most popular events and now is regarded the same as the Olympics. These people are now widely celebrated, and it is in their power to become athletes, even if it is just within their community.

Socioeconomic Inclusion – The History Of Inclusivity In Sports

Another important part of this topic is socio-economic inclusion. According to The Jabian Journal, during the pandemic, many people lost their jobs and significant income due to the lockdown. While many would believe that the sport has nothing to do with the workers around it, this opinion is ultimately false. Fans pay for the game, and without fans, there is no game.

The fans fall in love with the offline events by seeing the large crowd, the popular athletes, the marketing, the available food, the culture, and the music surrounding it. Therefore, those who enriched the culture should also be supported through tough times. No matter what your socioeconomic inclusion or religion is, you should be able to be a part of both the fans, the organization, and the industry as a whole.

We Are All Writing Our Future’s History

In conclusion, we highly recommend you take the history of inclusivity in sports in high regard. No one wants to be excluded for who they are, and what cards life has dealt to them. Whether this is genetic or situational, what makes life interesting for humans is the small joys in life, such as watching the next game, or considering a chance to become an athlete.

According to the My East Coast Experience, even CIS straight white males are a part of the inclusivity movement, as we should make sure to never put an agenda up against any individual. Therefore, let us all celebrate the fact that we are human, and we get to love and accept each other, making peace in the world.
