• Ronda Rousey is the subject of mockery
• Fellow fighters sympathize with the fallen star
• Will she make a comeback?

News of the Ronda Rousey knockout has spread like wildfire since the MMA champion lost her title to Holly Holm this weekend, and not all of the responses were positive.

Ronda Rousey has been the victim of criticism and ridicule since she was knocked out by Holm at UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia. Everyone from Lady Gaga to Lennox Lewis to Donald Trump weighed in on her the Ronda Rousey knockout, with Trump commenting on Twitter that : “Glad to see that @RondaRousey lost her championship fight last night. Was soundly beaten – not a nice person!”

Ronda Rousey had previously enjoyed the reputation of being an unbeaten Ultimate Fighting Champion, and was feared by everyone who stepped into an octagon with her. Worth an estimated USD 5 million, she is one of the most marketable athletes in the world. Aside from her fighting career, she is an accomplished actress and model and best-selling author.

The new champion is, of course, Holly Holm, a former boxing champion and undefeated mixed martial artist. “The Preacher’s Daughter” as she’s known is an Albuquerqu, New Mexico native who is famous for her head kicks on online gambling sites in US and who has won by knockout in seven of her last ten fights. Despite Rousey being the favourite, Holm’s received a lot of praise for her win from athletes happy to see a champion boxer beat a champion UFC fighter.

In contrast to all the negative reactions and US gambling news that’s come out since the Ronda Rousey knockout, is support for the athlete from fellow fighters. Floyd Mayweather, Jr.—with whom Rousey has gotten into frequent verbal battles with for years—was surprisingly sympathetic.

Mayweather, Jr. denied having anything to do with a Instagram post from 50 Cent making fun of Rousey, and stated that: “I haven’t really spoke to anyone about the Ronda Rousey situation, just to set the record straight. I don’t have anything against MMA fighters. It’s just like boxing; you win some, you lose some. A true champion can take a loss and bounce back.”

Rousey also received support from Anderson “the Spider” Silva, who, like she, was an undefeated MMA defeater prior to his defeat the hands of Chris Weidman in 2013. Knowing full well what how it feels to get knocked down and then have to climb back to the top, Silva posted some words of encouragement for Rousey on Instagram, saying: “Our biggest glory doesn’t come from never falling down. But, in fact, how we always stand up after each fall. With determination, you will overcome this bad time. I know very well how it is. You are a great athlete and transcend the MMA world. My kids love you. So don’t forget: To fall makes us stronger to stand up. You deserve the best of this world. Nobody is forever. All of us have lost, and to lose makes us stronger.”

Can there be a return from the Ronda Rousey knockout?

In the middle of all the talk about the Ronda Rousey knockout is Rousey herself, who has stayed relatively silent since her take down, instead opting to go into hiding and lick her wounds. Since the match she’s been trying to hide proof of her downfall from the public eye, even going as far as to hide her wounded face in shame when arriving in LAX on November 17.

Aside from the odd sighting, Rousey has said little. However, she is already planning her glorious comeback to the octagon and online sportsbooks in US. She recently made an optimistic post on Instagram, which stated: “I just wanted to thank everyone for the love and support. I appreciate the concerns about my health, but I’m fine. As I had mentioned before, I’m going to take a little bit of time, but I’ll be back.”
