Things To Do In Glasgow During the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships

Though you might be a massive cycling fan, you should also try to find some time to explore this ancient Scottish city. It’s easy to get around with a great public transport infrastructure. Below, we’ve listed some of the must-see sites.

The Finnieston Crane and The Clyde

Once a symbol of Glasgow’s shipbuilding prowess, the colossal gray Finnieston crane stands tall. It’s a relic from an era when this city held immense industrial significance worldwide. The crane is adorned with the name of its previous owner, Clydeport. As such, this towering structure serves as a reminder of the once-thriving shipyards along the Clyde River.

Unfortunately, it’s now reduced to a mere four surviving structures. Although it no longer functions, the Finnieston Crane remains an integral part of a picturesque stroll along the Clyde. It offers glimpses of various landmarks that stretch from Glasgow Green, located east of the city center, all the way upriver to Govan.

Glasgow Cathedral and Necropolis

Glasgow Cathedral, consecrated in 1197, stands as a formidable testament to Scottish Gothic architecture. In fact, this is showcased in its grandeur, both inside and out. Adjacent to the cathedral lies another notable gem, the Necropolis. This is a captivating cemetery reminiscent of Paris’ Père Lachaise and was established in 1833. Stroll amidst the majestic monuments and gaze upon the cityscape. Ponder the verdant and idyllic scenery that once graced this place over two centuries ago.

Try a Single Malt Whiskey at Clydeside Distillery

Tucked away within the historic Pumphouse building, Clydeside Distillery emerged as a pioneering addition to Glasgow’s distilling scene. In 2017, the distillery commenced its operations, firing up its expansive copper stills. Embark on a tour of their immaculate and awe-inspiring facilities to witness the distillation process in full swing.

Nestled on Mitchell Lane, adjacent to Buchanan Street, you’ll find an exquisite architectural marvel. It’s a tall and slender structure crafted with a fusion of stone, steel, and glass. This remarkable establishment, known as the Centre for Design, stands as a guiding light for Scotland’s creative industries. It serves as a hub for cutting-edge art and design exhibitions that captivate visitors all year round. Within its walls, you’ll discover the esteemed ‘Mack’ Centre.

This is a homage to the renowned Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of Glasgow’s most celebrated figures. Mackintosh, the mastermind behind the historic section of The Lighthouse (formerly The Herald newspaper building), is commemorated here for his exceptional life and work.
