The German Handball Bundesliga celebrates 50-year anniversary

The story of the best handball league in the world dates back to 1966, when the reform of the handball tournaments from the period was being realized in West Germany. Due to this reform act, two separate handball divisions were formed: South and North. They were united in 1977, forming what we now know as German Handball Bundesliga. As it was the case in the past years, 18 clubs will again compete for the prestigious champion of HBL. As never before the rivalry between the teams is at the highest possible level with three teams that have equal chances to be on the first place on table at the end of the season: THW Kiel, Rhein-Neckar Lowen and SG Flensburg-Handewitt. The record holder when the champion’s titles in the German Handball Bundesliga are concerned is already well known. THW Kiel is on the top of this list with 20 titles, followed by Vfl Gummerbach with 12 and TV Grosswallstadt with 6.

Other records that will probably not be challenged this year are the ones concerning the top scorer in the German Handball Bundesliga. In any category the legendary Korean right back Yoon Kyung-shin is the record holder. In the season 2001/02 he scored 324 goals in the white-blue shirt of Gummersbach which is the greatest number of goals scored in a season. The same player is the record holder in the category of top scorer of the HBL being on the top on the list 8 times, six of which were consecutive from the season 1996/97 until 2001/02. Yoon Kyung-shin is also the first one of the eternal list of top scorers in the German Handball Bundesliga with 2905 scored goals in 406 matches. Unfortunately, beside all these amazing numbers behind the name of this super star, Yoon Kyung-shin never won the champion’s title of the German Handball Bundesliga, according to online sportsbooks in Germany.

Who will be the new champion in the German Handball Bundesliga?

A survey that was conducted until the middle of the past week asking: “who will be the next German handball champion” gave some unexpected results. More than 50% of the readers of the prestigious handball-world portal have the opinion that the new champion of the German Handball Bundesliga will be SG Flensburg-Handewitt, the team that unexpectedly won the Champions League two years ago. On the second place according to the votes of the readers is THW Kiel whose chances seem to be in considerable decline after the departure of their icon, Filip Jicha, in the team of Barcelona. The vice champion from the previous year, Rhein-Neckar Loewn is ranked in third place while the former Bundesliga champion Magdeburg is fourth. The top five list is closed with a big surprise in the fifth position, ThSV Eisenach.

Kiel are favorites to win this year again. Like they usually have been the past decade.

As portals dealing with internet betting in Germany stress, this survey does not reflect the plan of the TV that will transmit the matches from the League this season. Sport 1 will cover the 38 matches during the season, 26 through TV and Livestream and 12 only via Livestream. The team that will have most transmissions is of course the THW Kiel whose matches will have live coverage 16 times. The only matches of THW Kiel which will not be transmitted are the ones against Lemgo, Bergischer HC, ThSV Eisenach and HBW Balingen-Weilstetten. Beside THW Kiel, Rhein-Necker Lowen will have seven while SG Flensburg-Handewitt six transmissions this year.
