The gambling industry in Romania is certainly one that has seen its ups and downs. Long ago, in 1906 a national lottery was started and only came to an end when Romanian gambling law was changed to accommodate the Soviet Occupation. After the Soviet presence departed, gambling was once again made legal in 1991.
All kinds of betting options and possibilities are present in Romania today. The one form of gambling, however, that seems to be gaining in popularity at a rate like nothing seen before it is poker.
Romanian poker rooms as well as their internet-based counterparts are few and far between, even today. The game’s popularity however, is rising quickly. The only hurdle in its way to popularity lies in the rarity of internet gambling in Romania.
This may all change in the near future, however, as Romania will enjoy a lot of world-wide media coverage in connection with the well-known World Poker Tour. The tour will be hosted in the Regent Casino in Bucharest.
Romanians are feeling a little bit tense about the competition being held in their capital city after what happened not long ago in Berlin. A heist was directed to rob the European Poker Tour tournament of its ample cash by armed assailants. The Romanians are putting their best efforts into ensuring the safety of upcoming crowds.
The option of storing the prize cash elsewhere was considered, but not for long. For entertainment purposes, it was decided that the cash will still be held at the scene of the tournament. Suspicious behavior before the event will be investigated and extra metal detectors will be put into operation at the event.
