Big European sides have been paired together after the Champions League final 16 draw took place in Nyon, Switzwerland.

Following the last Champions League games that were played last week, all of football world has been in great anticipation of what the draw would bring. Only the best of the teams from the group stage made it to the next round where all the stakes increase and there is no room for error, as only two games will be played in each encounter between the respective clubs. Now let’s have a look at the clubs that will lock horns and fight to reach the final in Berlin that will be held on June 6th, 2015.

Arsenal vs Monaco

The Gunners finished their group second which put them level on points with Dortmund (13 points), however everything is set to become far more challenging for them from this point on. Arsene Wenger will now face Monaco in the round of 16, a team that he used to manage for a total of 7 years in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The good news for Arsenal is that Monaco is not as formidable as they were before they sold James Rodriguez and loaned out Radamel Falcao. Nevertheless, the club from the French principality will still try to impose themselves and do everything in their power to ruin Arsenal’s hopes of further advancement.

Manchester City vs Barcelona

Manchester City will have a chance to prove themselves once again against the same team that knocked them out last season at this stage. The Blues have been pitted against FC Barcelona, however online sportsbooks in UK don’t have too much faith in them as they just narrowly qualified for the further progress.

More importantly, they will be tested against a team that features the likes of Messi, Neymar, Suarez, Iniesta and many other highly skilled footballers. Although Manuel Pellegrini also maintains some impressive players within his ranks, he find it difficult finding a solution against a club like Barcelona.

Schalke vs Real Madrid

Schalke has been dealt the worst opponent possible. They will go up against Real Madrid, a team that conquered their 10th Champions League last season and are one of the main favorites to make is back-to-back titles. They boast perhaps the most fearsome squad in the competition which includes the likes of; Ronaldo, Bale, Rodriguez, Benzema and many other big stars.

The German side is managed by former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo who got them their first Champions League title in 2012, however we doubt that he can outclass Los Blancos chief Carlo Ancelotti who has won 3 European crowns so far as a manager.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Atletico Madrid

Bayer Leverkusen will play against last season’s Champions League runner ups Atletico Madrid, so the match should prove to be somewhat challenging for them to overcome. They finished their group behind Monaco with 10 points and have recorded two losses in the process, so they will be aiming to improve their performance against their next opponents.

Atletico topped Group A with 13 points and although they lost several high profile players over the summer they can still challenge to a certain point. Diego Simeone is one of the most talented young coaches and fans can be sure to expect a great show once the first encounter comes around.

PSG vs Chelsea

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea will once again play against a team that they beat in the Champions League last season in the quarter finals. PSG will host the London side in the first encounter so they will look to take full advantage of playing at home and building up a lead. By way of UK gambling laws, many sportsbooks still regard Chelsea as the favorite for the match.

This season Chelsea is unstoppable both in the Premier League and in the Champions League, from which they have amassed 14 points without a single defeat during the group stage. Taking into account that both sides are quite powerful at the moment, this matchup will be a one great spectacle to watch once it comes around in February.

Shakhtar vs Bayern Munich

Shakhtar has been paired up with Bayern Munich, who won the competition in 2013 under former manager Jupp Heynckes. The Ukrainians weren’t very convincing this season in the group stage and were it not for their star striker Adriano, they probably would have endured a much difficult time and possibly suffered demotion to the Europa League.

• Barcelona will face Manchester City in a rematch
• PSG and Chelsea are set to go head to head once again
• Arsenal will play against Arsene Wenger’s former side Monaco

Bayern on the other hand are one of the other favorites, alongside Real Madrid, to lift the trophy this season in Berlin. They are unstoppable domestically and have managed to replicate the fine form to the Champions League where they won 5 times and lost only once in the group stage. It is safe to assume that they should easily overcome Shakhtar considering their superiority.

Basel vs Porto

The Swiss team will face a test against Porto in the round of 16. Basel has overcome the difficult clubs from the group stage, which boasted Liverpool and real Madrid, and ensured their progression to the next round. However, now they have been drawn against Group H leaders Proto, a team that amassed 14 points in the group stage without any defeats.

The Portuguese side has enjoyed great form under Spanish manager Julen Argote and they will be looking to make further advancement in Europe’s elite competition. Their next match against Basel should see them claim the bragging rights over their opponents as they possess more depth within their team.

Juventus vs Dortmund

Juventus and Dortmund have been drawn together in the round of 16, a match that many would like to have seen in the latter stages of the competition instead of so suddenly. The Turin side have not managed to assert themselves in the group stage as they avoided dropping down to the Europa League narrowly, according to UK gambling news.

Dortmund on the other hand were flying high in their group which saw them score a total of 14 goals and record 13 points in the process. This encounter should prove difficult for both sides, as they both hold certain strengths that could help them at any moment, but then against they are also prone to making mistakes at crucial times.
