A casino has recently opened up in Bucharest, Romania and the games provided to it were manufactured by none other than Playtech Cyprus Ltd. Playtech is most well known for developing online gaming technology for internet casinos, but it has some land-based products for gambling as well. Such machines, as were sold to the new casino in Bucharest, have seen plentiful action in other locations such as the UK and Italy.
Romania has been a home to gambling since 1906. There was a brief hiatus in the legality of gambling during the Soviet occupation, but as of 1990 Romanian gambling laws have permitted gambling in all forms. The industry is very strong in Romania and, as is the case in Bucharest, casinos are still being built to accommodate the huge demand.
Though land-based gambling is still more popular, internet gambling in Romania has also taken off. The Romanian government does not grant online gambling licenses. However, it doesn’t hinder nationals from playing online in any way.
An internet casino, Danube Casino, was launched in 2003 in Romania, but it didn’t manage to stay afloat and came to an end a few years later. Current online gambling sites in Romania are actually located offshore. Some of the sites that can be accessed by Romanians and cater to them in the Romanian language are run on Playtech software. At this point, Playtech’s presence can be detected both on the internet and most recently on land when it comes to gambling.
