The New York police recently caught the people behind the largest illegal cockfighting ring in America.
New York police officers have arrested nine people for organizing illegal cockfights. Over 3,000 roosters were rescued in the process. Local gambling news claim this is the biggest cockfighting ring uncovered in the US.
Police investigations revealed that the illegal activities took place in an apartment building in Queens, New York. Meanwhile, a pet shop in Brooklyn was selling fighting chicken and the animals were trained on a 90-acre farm located in Plattekill, New York. Locals are referring to the case as “Operation Angry Birds”.
The police finally put an end to the whole illegal operation last week, when they caught 70 people attending a fight.
Animals tortured for profit
American gambling laws forbid cockfighting, but it appeared that locals were enjoying the controversial sport. Spectators were paying for their seats and the whole operation was quite successful.
“Cockfighting is a cruel, abusive and barbaric practice that tortures animals, endangers the health and safety of the public and is known to facilitate other crimes,” New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman stated.
Nine people were charged with felonies and now risk a four-year prison sentence. Meanwhile, animal rescue groups are trying to help authorities find a suitable shelter for the rescued roosters.
