2024 FA Cup Recap
Before we predict the outcome of the FA Cup winner this season, it is always a good idea to have a recap of what has happened so far. In previous rounds, we have seen Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Brighton comfortably deal with their opponents. However, they are not the only ones to have impressed so far. Let’s break it down.
Manchester City
The reason why Manchester City are the favorites to win the FA Cup this season is because they have done it time and time again. Last year, they secured history in becoming only the second English team ever to win the treble. More notably, they defeated their arch-rivals, Manchester United, in the FA Cup final. However, they had a completely different team back then, with both goals in the 2-1 win scored by German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. The German has since moved from Manchester to Barcelona.
Manchester City have odds 2.85 to win the trophy, should you bet on them right now. Of course, the odds at BC.Game Sportsbook will change as the competition advances. To get to Round 5, City had to defeat Huddersfield and Tottenham Hotspurs. The 3rd round game against Huddersfield saw City easily cruise to a 5-0 home win. The goal scorers on the day included Phil Foden (two goals), Julian Alvarez, Jeremy Doku and an own goal from Ben Jackson.
In the fourth round, Manchester City travelled to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London. They pulled off an impressive away win, defeating Spurs 1-0 courtesy of a late Nathan Ake winner in the 88th minute. Spurs, a team that is getting back to their best, could not have any answers to Manchester City and have been eliminated from the competition.
Liverpool
As much as Manchester City are favorites to win, online sportsbook sites in the UK would just as much back Liverpool to win the trophy. They are currently leading the standing in the Premier League, and have won the FA Cup previously with Jurgen Klopp. Incidentally, Jurgen Klopp announced he will be leaving at the end of the season, which means the FA Cup is a trophy that can send Klopp out on a high-note. Online sportsbook sites value Liverpool to become the next FA Cup winners with odds 4.0.
Liverpool, much like City, were also impressive in recent rounds. They travelled to North London for Round 3 of the competition. Playing against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Liverpool managed to secure a 2-0 win thanks to a goal from Luis Diaz and a Jakub Kiwior own goal. However, despite the impressive result, Liverpool’s best player on the day was Alisson, the goalkeeper. It just shows how much they were on the backfoot and had to rely on the safe hands of the Brazilian international.
The 4th round of the FA Cup was the first game Liverpool played after Klopp made his resignation announcement. It could have been a banana-skin for the Reds, playing at home against Norwich. Liverpool managed to defeat the Championship team 5-2, thanks to goals from Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch. The two consolation goals for Norwich were scored by Ben Gibson and Borja Sainz. Liverpool displayed their attacking prowess, and with Klopp motivating the players to finish the season strongly, they could be the firm favorites to win the FA Cup.
Manchester United
Despite having a torrid season, Manchester United are also through to the 5th round of the FA Cup. The team were runners-up last season, defeated by their city rivals in a 2-1 loss. More importantly, the team failed to defend the treble, a feat that only Manchester United had achieved in the 1998/99 season. Due to the loss, City have the bragging rights to say they have done the treble as well, perhaps even more respectably.
Manchester United are branded with odds 9.0 at BC.Game Sportsbook to win the FA Cup. They will have to take the final step should they reach the final, something that they failed to do last year. Fortunately for Manchester United, they have had favorable draws so far in the tournament this season. In the 3rd round, United defeated Bolton 2-0 away from home. The goals were scored by Portuguese duo, Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes.
More recently, Manchester United defeated Newport County 4-2 away from home in South Wales. Having been 2-0 up, Newport fought back to make it 2-2, before United retook the lead. The goal scorers on the day for the Red Devils were Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Antony and Rasmus Hojlund. Although Erik ten Haag will know that his United team is far from perfect, he may have an outside chance of winning the FA Cup, should he start to get the players back in form. Last season, there was a purple patch during the year in which United looked to be a real force to reckon with. It was during that period that the team had managed to win the EFL Cup, defeating Newcastle 2-0 in the final.
Newcastle
Having just spoken about Newcastle’s loss, Eddie Howe will be hoping to secure a trophy this year for the Magpies. Newcastle narrowly missed out on silverware last season but will have a stronger chance of winning it this year. The club were in a final last year, they may be winners this year. Newcastle are branded odds 9.0 to win the FA Cup from BC.Game Sportsbook, a respectable return.
In the third round, Newcastle smashed rivals Sunderland 3-0 away from home. The goals were scored by Alexander Isak (two goals) and an own goal from Daniel Ballard. It was an impressive result for the team, as Sunderland is one of the most hostile stadiums in the region against the Magpies. In their more recent tie, Newcastle were drawn against Premier League opposition when they had to play at Craven Cottage against Fulham. The fixture was seen as a potential banana skin but Newcastle managed to win 2-0 away from home. The goals were scored by Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn. Incidentally, Dan Burn was named as man of the match for the round.
While Newcastle do not have much recent success in silverware, they are certainly a team on the up. A few years ago, all the team could hope for was avoiding relegation. This season, they have already played against (and defeated) Paris Saint Germain in the UEFA Champions League. They have also had success against Manchester United, Aston Villa, Arsenal and several other clubs. It would be unwise to doubt Newcastle and their ability to win.
Chelsea
One of the hardest teams to predict this season is Chelsea. They have played impressive games and also had complete stinkers. To mention a few, Chelsea defeated Spurs 4-1 away from home and drew 4-4 with Manchester City, in what can only be described as the most entertaining game of the season so far. However, the team have also lost at home to Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa. It is almost a team that is completely unpredictable.
The team is managed by Mauricio Pochettino, who everyone remembers from his days at Tottenham. He is the reason why Tottenham have had recent success and stayed relevant for the past few years. He also took them to a UEFA Champions League final. However, Pochettino has still not been able to get his Chelsea side performing consistently. One takeaway is that he will have the chance to win his first cup in England when Chelsea plays Liverpool in the EFL Cup final on the 25th of February.
Chelsea are not yet into Round 5. They will have to play a replay game at Villa Park following a 0-0 draw with the team. Managed by Unai Emery, Aston Villa are one of the most impressive teams this season. They have the best home record (not good for Chelsea) and are currently in a title run. Should Chelsea advance past Aston Villa, they will certainly become a team to be considered with a strong chance.
The odds of Chelsea to win the FA Cup are 13.0. Similarly, the odds of Aston Villa to win the FA Cup are 15.0. This fixture can go either way and it is definitely going to be one of the most exciting games for Round 4. Should either one of these teams advance, we could expect to see them enter the latter stages of the competition.
