How much will the long-awaited sequel gross in the opening weekend?
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune sequel has already premiered in London and Paris and is going to hit worldwide big screens on February 28th. Dune 2 box office predictions look much more optimistic than its predecessor, which grossed $433 million in 2021.
Dune Part II Plot Summary (no spoilers)
The plot of the 2021 Dune was heavily based on the first half of Frank Herbert’s book of the same name, and there is no reason to assume that the second movie will not follow suit. The second half of the epic saga describes Paul’s (Timothee Chalamet) ascendance as the Fremen leader and his plotting revenge against the Harkonnen Clan.
Some online sportsbooks in Australia predict that Paul’s love interest, Chani (Zendeya), will be the main focaliser of the movie, but will still see it in the context of Paul’s life.
Release Date & Cast
The world premiere of Dune Part Two took place in London on February 15th. Initially scheduled for October 20th, 2023, its release was pushed back to November 17th, 2023, then to November 3rd, 2023, to accommodate changes in other studios’ release schedules. Subsequently delayed by over four months to March 15th, 2024, due to Hollywood labor disputes in 2023. Dune 2 will be screened in IMAX 70 mm format at twelve venues worldwide.
The cast for the second chapter remains very much the same, with Chalamet, Zednaya, Ferguson, and Skarsgard on board. Every single surviving character is present in the sequel, with the addition of several new characters, such as Emperor Shaddam IV, played by Christopher Walken, Shaddam’s daughter Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), and Harkonnen’s successor, Feyd (Austin Butler). However, you can bet on extended roles of the supporting cast and some exciting cameos at 22Bet.
Dune Part I Underperformed in 2021
What about Dune 2 box office predictions? The first movie made a total of $433 million globally, including $109 million in the US and Canada and $293.7 million in other countries.
After Godzilla vs. Kong, Dune Part I became the second Warner Bros. movie of the pandemic period to gross over $100 million in the United States and Canada on November 25th, 2021. Despite quite impressive revenue in the post-pandemic circumstances, the first chapter is considered a “flop” due to the total production and marketing cost of $300 million. However, the 2021 movie has returned to IMAX before the sequel release, so is highly likely to cross the $500 million line.
Dune 2 Box Office Predictions are All Positive
Last Thursday, Deadline reported that Dune Part Two is expected to outpace Oscar-nominated box office hit Oppenheimer in terms of presale ticket sales. The sequel is expected to gross over $65 million during its domestic premiere, which already sets its final box office line further than Part I.
Nonetheless, some experts estimate that this film might gross between $75 and over $80 million on its first weekend of release, including not only the devoted audience for Frank Herbert’s original Dune stories and fans of Denis Villeneuve’s movies but also ordinary viewers. Online gambling sites in Australia go further and grant Dune 2 the title of the year’s highest-grossing movie. Considering excellent critic reviews and the hype, we probably have the first big hit in 2024 premiering now.
