The Road to Milan has been brought one step closer to football fans as the Champions League draw for the quarter finals has been held.
Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Benfica and Wolfsburg. These are the top 8 clubs in Europe this season who are waiting for the Champions League draw to see who they have to face for getting into the semi-finals. Online sportsbooks in the EU regard Barcelona as favourites and Wolfsburg as underdogs, can there be any upsets?
Vfl Wolfsburg vs Real Madrid
The Royal Club are clear favourites for this clash as their squad is far superior to that of the German side. However, Los Merengues will need to prove their class if they want to secure their place in the semi-finals: Wolfsburg are underdogs and are among the weakest teams of the last 8, yet they are ready to upset the odds as soon as given the chance.
While Real Madrid are only third in the league, Wolfsburg are performing under expectations as well. They are only 8th in the Bundesliga which is a great surprise after their outstanding performances during the previous season. Zinedine Zidane’s men should finally show what they are capable of and defeat Vfl Wolfsburg.
FC Bayern Munich vs SL Benfica
Bayern Munich are obviously favourites for their clash against SL Benfica. The Bavarians were extremely close to elimination in the previous round, but they performed one of the best comebacks in the history of the Champions League: Juventus lead by 0-2 in the half time at Allianz Arena, yet the Bavarians managed to equalize in the last minutes, and scored 2 more goals in extra time.
Comebacks like these can give huge boost of confidence to any team, imagine what it could do to a team like Bayern Munich, that is full of world class football players like Douglas Costa and Robert Lewandowski… it’s hard to imagine the Portuguese side being able to defeat them. Bayern Munich’s way to the semi-finals seems rather clear.
FC Barcelona vs Atlético de Madrid
Of course, the Catalans are favourites for the clash at online sportsbooks, yet if anyone can stop them, then Diego Simeone’s men are the ones who to do it. Barcelona are having a perfect season, leading the league by 8 points, and are waiting for the Copa del Rey final against Sevilla after humiliating Valencia with a 8-1 knock out on combined result, and they are in the quarter finals of the Champions League as well.
However, the Champions League draw could not have been any worse for the Blaugrana. Atlético de Madrid are also having an outstanding season so far as they stand second in the league, 4 points ahead of Real Madrid. In addition, their style of play is basically the perfect weapon against Barca’s tiki-taka. A passionate Spanish derby is ahead of us, which will probably be the tightest encounter in the Champions League Quarter Finals.
Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester City
The Arabic money derby has been drawn together as a result of the Champions League draw for the quarter finals. Paris Saint-Germain will play against Manchester City. The two sides are regarded to be of around the same strength, but the French side seems to be the more stable team as their performance in the Ligue 1 is rather positive.
Despite the fact that Manchester City have already won a title this season, their Premier League performances make football fans believe that they are not among the favourites for the Champions League title. According to online sportsbooks in the UK, the French side are more likely to make it to the semi finals. We will see about that in April.
