Every day, bits of news seem to pop up about the highly anticipated bout between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. The two have traded verbal jabs for years now, and after a recent report that the T-Mobile Arena has been booked for an event this June, it’s beginning to look like these two fighting superstars may actually face off.
While no formal announcement has yet been made, a few signs are pointing to both promotional sides closing in on an agreement. A picture of Anderson Silva and Roy Jones Jr. together sparked rumors that it could serve as an undercard bout, and Floyd himself officially announced he ended his retirement. The betting odds are now set, so let’s see who most online sportsbooks in Ireland feel will get the victory.
Floyd Mayweather: 1/10
Boxing’s pound-for-pound king is unsurprisingly the massive betting favorite to beat Conor McGregor. Floyd Mayweather has been nothing short of dominant in his career, going 49-0 as a pro without taking any significant damage.
After his latest victory over Andre Berto, Mayweather stated his intention to retire from the sport. In typical Floyd fashion, however, he has since changed his tune and is looking to end his storied career with a massive payday against MMA’s biggest star.
There’s no doubt Mayweather is the more experienced, and likely more skilled boxer. His defensive abilities are among the best of all time, and he’s shown the kind of power to put great fighters away. It will be these defensive capabilities that will help him get a victory over McGregor, who has never fought professionally in boxing.
The McGregor vs. Mayweather betting odds are set, and unsurprisingly it’s the American who is listed as a massive 1/10 betting favorite over McGregor, according to PaddyPower. This fight should be his as long as he doesn’t get caught up in a slugfest with McGregor, who is a massive power puncher.
Conor McGregor: 6/1
In less than four years, Conor McGregor went from a relatively unknown prospect to the biggest star in MMA history. The Irish superstar recently make history by becoming the first fighter to earn belts in two weight classes simultaneously, and is now taking a break from the fight game while his girlfriend is pregnant.
McGregor may be the most skilled striker in MMA right now, but many questions linger over how he would fare inside a boxing ring. He’s certainly been training hard, sparring top boxers like Chris van Heerden and Michael Conlan.
Considering he’s never actually fought a pro boxing bout, the McGregor vs. Mayweather betting odds are not that drastic. He’s listed as a 6/1 underdog, which sounds right when considering who he’s facing.
For Conor to win, he’ll need to use his size and strength advantage and attempt to set up his big left hand. If he can throw Floyd off his game but bullying him around the cage, he has a real shot at making Irish gambling news with an upset victory.
