Boston Mayor Martin Walsh asked to have the city declared a host community for the casino proposals in Everett and Revere.
Under the American gambling laws applied here, the host community – meaning the municipality where a gambling facility is be located – has the power to negotiate lucrative agreements with casino developers looking to expand in the area. Voters also have the power to say “no” to the proposed project.
With the only casino license in eastern Massachusetts still up for grabs, Wynn and Mohegan Sun are of course against the idea of allowing Boston to join in on the vote. The local gaming commission will schedule a hearing on the subject.
New online casinos at the horizon
It looks like Massachusetts is not too eager to welcome any news gambling venues in the state. Meanwhile, California is preparing to legalize online poker sites.
New Jersey’s internet gambling industry is proving to be quite productive and several other states are also considering opening up to the idea.
At the moment, American gamblers can legally play online casinos in the US states of New Jersey and Delaware. These two states went live with their internet services last November.
