Draftkings loses out big time when peak hour bettings interrupted by blackouts
American-based Draftkings became the victim of their own success over the weekend. Outages, which
put quite a damper on internet gambling in the US on Sunday, lasted for hours, causing the company to
lose potential earnings all round.
Draftkings, which operates all of Fantasy Sports’ online betting websites, stands to lose huge amounts of
money when their system copped out during peak period on Sunday afternoon. As fans and bookies
scurried to make bets, the overloaded platform plunged into darkness.
Fantasy Sports to Pay Up for the Big Blackout
On the outset of the havoc wreaked, the company, who oversees one of the largest online sportsbooks in the US, will have to refund their bookies. This is in addition to the huge loss incurred from unplaced
bets on the National Football League games that were in progress.
Although some semblance of normalcy was ascertained around 4 pm, the company was criticized for
failure to see this coming. Draftking’s marketing strategy will have to be reviewed to take into
consideration that peak periods could hinder connectivity, although the actual reason for the blackouts
remain a mystery.
