Not every potentially scoring attack becomes a goal, and most of the time, it is a miss. Only truly great Premier League footballers manage to have more goals scored than opportunities failed, and the top-5 big chances missed in Premier League by its brightest stars are proof of that.
What is a big chance anyway? It is a potentially scoring opportunity that most likely will result in a goal. It is also calculated with the xG in mind, but that’s a nuance. With that in mind, a missed chance is a failed opportunity to score in a seemingly winning position. It’s a true nightmare for every football club fan and every online sportsbook in the UK bettor.
Players’ top-5 big chances missed in Premier League
According to the Premier League website, Sergio Agüero, Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Jamie Vardy, and Raheem Sterling have the greatest number of missed big chances in EPL history since 2010. We remind you that only goals scored and failed to score in EPL counted for this list.
- Sergio Agüero (Manchester City) – 128 missed chances, 184 goals
- Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur) – 128 missed chances, 213 goals
- Mohamed Salah (Chelsea and Liverpool) – 121 missed chances, 150 goals
- Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) – 115 missed chances, 136 goals
- Raheem Sterling (Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea) – 109 missed chances, 119 goals
As seen from the top-5, all of those players have a better goal to missed chances’ ratio despite the amount of chances missed. This fact is certainly admirable because the ability to score a point is what defines a great footballer.
5 big chances missed in Premier League by clubs
On the football clubs’ side of the same stats, it is logical to assume that the first five spots will be occupied by top-5 clubs. You don’t need to be a frequent Bet365 Sportsbook visitor to predict it. So, here it is – Manchester City lead the statistics with 841 big chances missed since the 2010/11 season. Their rivals, Liverpool, are runner-ups with 755, with other famous EPL clubs following the two.
Can you try to guess the entire top-5 without looking at the list below?
- Manchester City – 841
- Liverpool – 755
- Arsenal – 710
- Manchester United – 690
- Chelsea – 672
No wonder why Man City and Liverpool take the first two spots. Both teams have dominated the Premier League since 2017/18 and, at the same time, scored the highest number of goals than any other EPL club.
Man City though have an advantage as they have started scoring a lot of goals since exactly when the stats have been recorded, i.e. 2010/11 season. Despite all Man City FFP charges, they clearly had the most moments and, well, the bigger percentage of missed chances, too.
Liverpool managed to close in on them due to an immense amount of goals scored, and big chances missed by the Salah-Mane-Firmino trio.
Even to this day, the stats of the last two seasons have been led by Man City and Liverpool players – Erling Haaland and Darwin Nuñez. You can bet on both to lead their team to the EPL trophy in the 2023/24 season, as the odds are quite good at online gambling sites in the UK.
