USA kept the train rolling yesterday by edging past Ecuador in a wild affair that saw multiple fouls on both sides. Here are a few reasons to bet on the USA winning Copa America.

Ecuador has a very good football team. Their draw with Brazil and stunning victory over Haiti showed just how capable they can be. They were seen by some to be the dark horse of the 2016 Copa America, and many were predicting a victory over the still somewhat unproven USA team. The US had different plans, however, shutting down much of Ecuador’s offense and scoring key goals to advance into the semi-finals.

USA’s win over Ecuador has solidified their standing as a team to be reckoned with, and many football fans are now flocking to online sportsbooks to bet on USA winning the Copa America. They will not have an easy road, but they can pull it off.

Argentina vs. Venezuela

The favorites to win the 2016 Copa America will be up against one of only two South American countries to never win a Copa championship tomorrow night. Argentina has looked nothing short of invincible so far, surrendering only one goal and outclassing both Panama and Bolivia with 5-0 and 3-0 victories.

Venezuela bounced back from a tough loss to Jamaica by outpointing Uruguay 1-0 and coming to a tie with Mexico 1-1. They are now looking at an uphill battle with unquestionably the best team in this year’s tournament. Venezuela is a big underdog at +800, and for good reason.

This match will determine who USA will face in the semi-finals, and could be a good indicator as to what kind of competition the Americans will be up against. If Argentina continues their streak of clean sweeps, it could indicate USA will be in for a rough night. A Venezuela victory (however unlikely that may be) could help bolster US motivation and push them to strive for victory even harder.

The red card factor

One of the big talking points coming out of the US-Ecuador game was the red card given to Jermaine Jones early into the second half of the game. Many felt the ref’s call was too harsh, including US coach Jurgen Klinsmann who called it “a joke” and “a disgrace.”

The red card means that Jones will be out of the semi’s, with Kyle Beckerman entering as his replacement. Jones has been a key player in this tournament, scoring against Costa Rica and making key plays in almost every game.

In addition to Jones, Alejandro Bedoya and Bobby Wood are also on suspensions for yellow card accumulations. It has not yet been revealed who will be their replacements. There is little doubt that the three suspensions will hurt the chances of USA winning the Copa America, but as many are pointing out, the US is in the Copa semi’s for only the second time ever, and that is worth celebrating.

Jurgen Klinsmann and the home field advantage

Say what you want about Klinsmann, he has helped shape the US team into one of the most formidable teams in the America’s. In the 2014 World Cup, Klinsmann advanced the US into round 16, past a group stage including Germany, Ghana, and Portugal. He is unquestionably a large part of the USA’s recent football success, and could be a key to the USA winning the Copa America.

It’s important to factor in the home-field advantage that the US has this year as well. This is new for the Americans, who are often entering enemy territory for international games. The hardcore soccer fans here know how to pump up their athletes, and could be key in a US victory in the semi’s.

Seattle was the location for USA’s quarter final match against Ecuador. This is not just a sports city. Seattle is a soccer city. Clint Dempsey said it best, “the environment makes it special to play here.” Houston will be the setting for USA’s match in the semi-finals, and a raucous home crowd could again help stir the American team to victory.

It may be unlikely, but the USA winning Copa America is not impossible. They have continued to defy the odds, and seemed primed to pull off a semi-final upset. The match between Argentina and Venezuela will tell a lot about what they are up against, and what their chances are to win the tournament.
