The Olympic torch is a mandatory attribute of the Olympics. The torch design is unique to each Olympics. The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics torch, called “Flying” (飞扬, Fei yang), is no exception. Beijing will be the first city to host the Summer and Winter Olympics. The torch design pays homage to the Olympic heritage of the Chinese capital. It develops the theme of the Olympic flame bowl at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. It has the form of a giant scroll. So let’s take a closer look at the Beijing 2022 Olympic torch design!
Beijing 2022 Olympic Torch: Design
China unveiled the Olympic torch at a ceremony which was at the iconic 2008 Beijing Summer Games, the National Aquatics Center. They converted it into an Ice Cube to host the curling competition at the Olympic Winter Games next year. The torch design is dynamic. It is a spiral structure with a flame burning inside. And thus resembles a waving ribbon. The 2022 Olympics emblem is applied on the front. The twisted red stripe along the entire length of the torch symbolizes the Great Wall of China. Also the Olympic ski trails, and the relentless pursuit of light, peace, and perfection.
One of the main structural elements allows the two Olympic torches to mesh with each other at the top as the torchbearers’ exchange flames during the Olympic torch relay. According to online sportsbook news in China, the main colors of the design – red and silver – represent a metaphor for fire and ice. It contains the idea that the torch brings “light and warmth to the world of snow and ice.” It features the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics emblem with patterns of clouds and snowflakes painted from bottom to top to flame. The upward spirals of the Olympic torch resemble two overlapping, fluttering ribbons. The inner red ribbon evokes an upward flame. While the outer, silver-plated ribbon is ice, creating a striking contrast.
The Inspiration Behind the Olympic Torch
The Olympic torch will be the second to light the Olympic cauldron in the city after the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In recognition of Beijing being the first city in the world to host both the Summer and Winter Games, the 2022 Olympic Torch features a design similar to the 2008 main cauldron. It resembles a giant scroll highlighting the legacy of the Olympic spirit in the Chinese capital. Check out our post about the most memorable lightings of the Olympic cauldron. According to designer Li Jianye, the choice of color and the cloud ornament on the handle is a continuation of the 2008 Olympics torch design.
“Using the same color combination as the 2008 torch and similar artistic elements, we wanted to wish the world well-being and showcase the rich Olympic culture in Beijing that the world has already seen at the 2008 Olympics,” Li said.
During the Olympic Torch Relay, participants will benefit from the unique torch trait. When transferring fire, it will be necessary to intertwine “fluttering ribbons” at its end. So this is how the organizers want to express “the desire for mutual understanding and respect between different cultures.” As part of the Olympiad organizers’ strategy to hold a “green and high-tech Games”, the torch is made of carbon fiber materials. It is lightweight, heat-resistant, and runs on hydrogen. The torch is without harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The final design was chosen from 182 designs submitted through an international competition. Also, check out the online sportsbook sites in China for the upcoming Olympics.
