The 2023 European Tour continues this weekend in South Africa with the 2022 Alfred Dunhill Championship. Christiaan Bezuidenhout is the defending champion and the top favorite again. The 2022 Alfred Dunhill Championship odds also mention another South African player, Louis Oosthuizen among the favorites. Along with his compatriots, and former winners, Schwartzel, Grace, and top-form Lawrence.
The 22nd edition of the Alfred Dunhill Championship is held this week, between 8-11 December as the fifth race of the new season. And the third South African event in the 2023 European Tour. It is also part of the Southern African Sunshine Tour, returning to the calendar after the cancellation of last year’s event. The tournament is held at Leopard Creek Country Club in Malalane, in the neighborhood of the Kruger National Park. South African players have been dominating the tournament in the last few years. But we can also find Spanish, English, and American winners in the history of the event. Christiaan Bezuidenhout is the defending champion, and he can do well again. Just like other local favorites and top-form players like Thriston Lawrence.
The 2022 Alfred Dunhill Championship Odds Favor South African Champions
Christiaan Bezuidenhout won the 2020 tournament here, his second European Tour victory. The 28-year-old South African player didn’t have such results last season. But he started well in the new one after finishing T5 in the Nedbank Golf Challenge and T3 in Joburg Open. Online sportsbooks in South Africa mention him as the main favorite and offer odds of 9.00 for his victory. Another South African player, Louis Oosthuizen follows him in the favorites based on the 2022 Alfred Dunhill Championship odds. The 2010 Open Championship winner has nine European Tour wins so far but he got his last victory in 2018.
Since then he was playing in both PGA and the European Tour until this summer when he decided to join LIV Golf. He got four top-10 finishes in the new tournament but hasn’t shown his best form yet. Oosthuizen might do it now, on home soil, in the event where he was the runner-up in 2014. His odds to win it now are 12.00. Similar odds (13.00) are offered for his compatriot, Charl Schwartzel. The 38-year-old South African is a specialist in this course, after he managed to win here three times so far. While he also won an earlier tournament in Houghton back in 2004. And finished as a runner-up on four more occasions. The 2011 Masters winner also plays in LIV Golf now and managed to win their first-ever event in London.
Top-form players who can fight for the win
Still staying with local favorites, online gambling sites in South Africa mention the current leader of the European Tour, Thriston Lawrence next. The 26-year-old player got his first win a year ago, at the 2021 Joburg Open. Since then he also won the Omega European Masters in the summer and the Investec South African Open Championship last weekend. He received the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award for his performance last season. But Lawrence seems to continue on a similar level in the new one. He will appear in his fifth tournament at Leopard Creek with an odds of 19.00 to win it.
We can also find players from other countries in the field, like Spanish Adrian Otaegui. He is a four-time winner of the European Tour, getting his last victory this October at the Andalucia Masters. Otaegui also joined LIV Golf and finished 6th in the first event in London. But he only finished T20 here in 2020. The 30-year-old player can get a better result now and has an odds of 29.00 to earn his fifth win. Eddie Peperell will arrive with the aim of his third Europen Tour win following his previous victories in 2018. The English player finished as a runner-up in the 2022 Hero Open this July, which was his first top-5 finish since 2019. As another promising sign, he also finished 4th in the Portugal Masters in October. His odds to finish on top now are 36.00 on 22Bet.
