There are only two weeks until the 78th Golden Globe Awards. So it’s time to check the favorites in all major categories. After our Best Actor preview you can read now about the biggest favorites for the Best Actress awards. Where a tight race is expected in the drama category according to the 2021 Golden Globe Best Actress winner odds.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will award the best actress performances in both dramas and in comedies/musicals just like in the Best Actor categories. Last year Renee Zellweger won the drama category with her performance in Judy. While Awkwafina got the award in the comedy category. This year Frances McDormand is in the favorites to win in drama with her latest performance in Nomadland. But she is facing a tough competition and the award might go to a first time winner this time. Maria Bakalova can emerge as a winner in comedy after her performance in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm has been accepted as a main role. Even though she was promoted in the supporting category before and can be nominated in that category in the Oscars.
2021 Golden Globe Best Actress winner expect tight race in drama
For long, Frances McDormand looked like a safe bet to win her second Golden Globe after her first victory in 2018. She is still mentioned in the top favorites but her odds are not the lowest anymore. Even though her performance in this year’s big drama, Nomadland is very powerful. She plays Fern, who goes on a journey in the Western part of America with a van after losing her job. McDormand has been nominated for the Golden Globe on six occasions already but only won it once. Now her odds to win it again is 3.22 in the 2021 Golden Globe Best Actress winner odds.
But online sportsbooks in the US offer the smallest odds, 2.49 for the victory of another actress, Carey Mulligan. She plays in Emerald Fennell’s thriller, Promising Young Woman where the main character seeks to avenge her best friend’s rape. Mulligan has got one previous nomination from 2009 but now she can easily win the award. Just like Viola Davis who was legendary blues singer Ma Rainey in the Netflix-film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Davis was nominated five times before and got the win in the Best Supporting Actress category with Fences in 2016. Now she has the odds of 3.00 in the 2021 Golden Globe Best Actress winner odds.
Maria Bakalova is a huge favorite in the comedy category
Probably not many people have known about Maria Bakalova before her latest role in the sequel of Borat, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. The 24-year old Bulgarian actress plays the daughter of Borat, Tutar Sagdiyev who goes to America with her father. She is a gift for US Vice President, Mike Pence in this mockumentary. Bakalova has already won several awards with her performance and now has the odds of 1.40 to win the Golden Globe as well.
Online gambling sites in the US mention Michelle Pfeiffer with the odds of 4.50 for her role in surreal comedy, the French Exit. She plays a heiress who moves to Paris with her son and her cat who is actually her reincarnated husband. It might sound strange but Pfeiffer has only won one Golden Globe so far. Back in 1989 for The Fabulous Baker Boys. Meanwhile the 24-year-old Anya Taylor-Joy can win even two awards. She got the nomination here for playing in the latest adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, Emma. But she is also a big favorite in the Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film category for her role in The Queen’s Gambit.
