According to a current report by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Telecommunications and Information (MINTEL), about 80% of households own cellphones, around 25% of Ecuadorian households have a desktop computer and 10% owns a laptop. The total Internet penetration in Ecuador is about 38%, with a total of more than 5.5 million users nationwide.
32.6% of the population uses the Internet mainly to communicate with family and friends, while 31.1% use it for information. About 55% of people who use the Internet do it at least once per day, while 39.5% do at least once per week. In urban areas, 57% of people use the Internet at least once per day, while in rural areas 51.1% of people use the Internet at least once per week. Under a new digital plan, Ecuador aims for Internet access to half of all household by 2015.
Ecuador’s mobile base reaches 15.76 million, and 3G subscriptions hit 1.47 million. There are over 520,000 smartphone users in Ecuador. Nearly 70% of them use their handsets to access social network services, 69.8% - search info on the web, 65.9% - check email, 62.1% - play mobile games and listen to music, and 42.8% - access GPS applications.
