Antoine Griezmann continues to make headlines during the summer transfer window with a bunch of teams in the running for his services.
With only a month left to go before the 2014/15 Barclays Premier League kicks off, all the teams are trying to take advantage of the transfer window. Whether they will be able to increase their strength or not until the start of the season, will seriously influence their odds at online sportsbooks in the United Kingdom.
Who’s making the headlines
Antoine Griezmann is one of the main targets of many European football teams
• Online sportsbooks in the United Kingdom favor Chelsea to sign the Frenchman
• Griezmann reportedly refused to prolong contract with Real Sociedad
• There’s a GBP 25 million buyout clause in his contract
While the biggest transfer news is still Luis Suarez leaving the Reds to join Barcelona for around GBP 70 million, that move is almost totally completed. But there are several big acquisitions for the British teams as well.
Jose Mourinho is surely striving to make the Blues as strong as possible, and is currently enjoying the favorable odds from bookies under British gambling laws to win the League. The Special One has already secured the firepower of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa. The manager’s sights are now set on Antoine Griezmann, the young Frenchman from Real Sociedad.
The French international has revealed his great skills at the World Cup, and is now one of the hottest targets not only at Stamford Bridge. He will most probably leave Real Sociedad, as he was reported to reject a new contract offer from the Spanish side.
The 23-year-old has a GBP 25 million buyout stipulation in his contract, which seems like pennies to Abramovich. Those who bet on sports in the United Kingdom can back Chelsea to be able to land Griezmann with 1.44 odds.
Others in the running for Griezmann
Naturally Jose Mourinho and Chelsea are not the only ones looking to have Antoine on their squad. Since Monaco will most likely lose James Rodriguez to Real Madrid following his excellent performance at the World Cup and the Golden Boot won there, the French side is also looking to buy Griezmann. Monaco are priced with 4.00 at Bet365 to sign the young Frenchman.
As for the other Premier League sides in the running for the rising star player, Arsenal are among the top teams. The Gunners have long been named as a possible team for Griezmann, even before the World Cup kicked off. And despite the fact that Arsenal have just signed Alexis Sanchez, Arsene Wenger’s team has been given 11.00 odds to bring the Frenchman to the Emirates.
Since Liverpool parted ways with Luiz Suarez, the Reds will surely put the GBP 70 million they got for him to good use. They have spent some of that money already on Lazar Markovic, Adam Lallana, and Rickie Lambert. But Brendan Rodger’s team still enjoys quite favorable odds of 11.00 to land Griezmann.
Both Manchester United and Tottenham got equal odds of 11.00 to provide the French winger with a brand new home. The French champions, Paris Saint-Germain, also boast the same 11.00 odds to attract Griezmann to the Parc des Princes.
AC Milan finished at a very disappointing 8th spot in Serie A last season, and definitely need a boost to their power capabilities. However, the Italian side looks highly unlikely to land Griezmann with 13.00 odds and bunch of other European squads ahead of them in the race for the winger.
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid got their hands full with other transfers, and Griezmann’s position is pretty much filled at both Spanish Grands. Real Madrid got 17.00 odds to sign the Frenchman, while Barcelona received even longer odds of 21.00.
Who is Antoine Griezmann?
Antoine was born on March 21st, 1991 in Macon, France. His first team was EC Macon, where he spent 2 years, and another 5 were spent at UF Maconnais, before the player went to Real Sociedad. His primary position is left winger and he’s renowned for his superb ball control, dribbling, and excellent speed and acceleration.
Griezmann has started representing his country at U-19 level, and was part of the French team, which won the 2010 UEFA European U-19 Championships held in France. The 2014 World Cup in Brazil was his first senior tournament for the national team, hopefully one of many to come.
During his five seasons with Real Sociedad, Griezmann made a total of 201 appearances and scored 52 goals, including 20 last season. Griezmann made Deschamps’ national squad for 2014 World Cup on May 13th, and scored his first international goal at adult level in a friendly against Paraguay. He went on to add two more in another friendly against Jamaica.
Griezmann substituted injured Franck Ribery and was chosen to start in the opening game of the World Cup for France, the match against Honduras ended in 3-0 win for France. He played in all five French matches, before Les Bleus were eliminated by Germany in the quarter-finals.
Wherever Antoine Griezmann ends up before the start of the new football season in Europe, he will surely make a valuable addition to the team. Still enjoying a young age, he’s got plenty of potential to grow on both league and international level.
