NRL Rules Out Widespread Betting Corruption among Rugby League Players

A special Integrity Unit investigating ethical misconducts among rugby players found no evidence of widespread betting corruption.

Authorities are trying to make sure that bookmakers and players abide by Australian gambling laws and Australian National Rugby League (NRL) rules, which forbid placing wagers on rugby league matches. The Integrity Unit found less than eight players who broke the code of conduct.

“Let me be clear that there is no suggestion of widespread abuse of betting rules or inappropriate conduct on the field related to betting,” NRL chief Jim Doyle told reporters.

“The Integrity Unit is looking into whether a small number of players have breached the code of conduct by placing small bets on rugby league games against our rules. If so, we will take appropriate action, which may include suspensions, to protect the interests of all players, fans and members.”

Investigations continue

Under NRL regulations, players, managers, club employees and other match officials are forbidden from wagering on rugby league games.

Further analysis is needed and the exact number of players is yet to be confirmed, but the good news is that investigations found no evidence of widespread betting corruption. Recent gambling news said the majority of wagers placed were small, but players could still face penalties for breaching the rules.

Doyle said NRL officials will not be making further comments until the Integrity Unit concludes its investigation.
