Authorities in Ontario Making Efforts to Help the Online Gambling Industry Grow

The Digital Gaming Taskforce will have a very specific mission: to develop the province’s online gambling industry.

A new organization has been created in the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The so-called Digital Gaming Taskforce will provide strategic direction for those looking to develop projects or attract investments.

Under Canadian gambling laws, the online industry is run by corporations organized at a state-level. Tom Marinelli, acting chief executive officer of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, and Anup Kumar, executive director for charitable gaming at the Canadian Banknote Company will both be members of the new online gambling group.

Team of experts

Among the experts brought on board are Terry DeBono, a partner at The Debono Group, Doug Pollard, co-chief executive officer of Pollard Banknote, David Schantz, vice-president of academic and research at Algoma University, Leo Tiberi, vice president of academic at Sault College, Tom Dodds, chief executive officer of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation and Tom Vair, executive director of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre.

In recent gambling news, Dodds told reporters: “Today’s announcement is one element of a multi-faceted strategy designed to drive new businesses here and create high-tech jobs.”

Vair added: “The Digital Gaming Taskforce is one element of a continuum of activities focused on business development in the community. We are very fortunate to have assembled this group of lottery and gaming leaders to help build local capacity in this sector and help guide us in our future efforts.”
