Man Suspected of Feeding Information to Betting Syndicate

Crawley police tweets: a football fan was detained, after being suspected of betting fraud.

The Football Association has launched an investigation into a possible betting syndicate fraud, after the Crawley Town police suspected a spectator present at the game between Coventry City and Crawley Town broke British gambling laws by feeding information to an overseas betting syndicate.

The authorities suspect the man was taking advantage of the broadcast delay on television and sending information to a betting syndicate from abroad, for spread betting purposes. In local gambling news, sergeant Darren Taylor claimed the man was revealing specific details on the League One football match, such as winning a corner.

Police action on Tweeter

First news about the possible betting fraud appeared on Tweeter, where representatives of the Crowley police wrote: “Spent some of the day working with FA fraud team and we ended up detaining a male (on suspicion of) feeding info back to an overseas syndicate at the match. The male was detained by the Police and spoken to in the presence of the FA Fraud Unit who are investigating this incident.”

The spectator was questioned at the Sixfields Stadium in Northampton, but the officers eventually let him go, as they did not find sufficient evidence to arrest him. It is now up to the Football Association to establish whether the man is guilty or not.
