At the Resorts World Casino in Queens, 175 casino workers lose their jobs following a labor arbitrator that issued a ruling doubling average employee pay.

Monday started out as an ordinary workday for the employees of the buffet restaurant at the casino complex, that is until they learned that the restaurant had been closed and their jobs were terminated.

The buffet workers hope that meetings between their union, the New York Hotel Trades Council, along with the casino’s representatives from the land based, online and mobile casino giant, The Genting Group, who own the complex, will result in alternative jobs within the casino.

The Resorts World Casino in Queens, which opened in 2011, pulled in revenues of $696.5 million in 2013, making it the country’s highest-grossing slot parlor.

Since US gambling laws pose strict restrictions on mobile betting, limited to the states of Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey, and does not allow for interstate gambling, the Resort Worlds Casino attracts a healthy market from New York City.

However, despite the high turnover in the casino itself, the buffet restaurant has been a cash hemorrhage for the complex since it opened its doors, not to mention the casino has several other restaurants on the premises.

Genting Group spokesperson Kerri Lyon, says that there is no connection between the workers’ pay rise and the recent dismissals.

“If we allowed it to remain open, it would have ultimately had a negative impact,” commented Ms. Lyon.
