Casinos in Maryland Generate Lowest Income Since Last Spring

While Maryland Live still makes big profits, the state’s other three casinos are not doing so well.

December’s financial reports are in and the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency announced that the state’s casinos made a profit of over $65 million. Even so, this is the lowest monthly revenue reporter since May, when the Rocky Gap Casino Resort opened its doors.

Maryland only has four land-based casinos licensed under American gambling laws. Hollywood Casino Perryville made a profit of almost $6.5 million with its slot machines and table games, while Ocean Downs only generated about $3.3 million. December’s revenues have gone up 38% on a year-to year basis.

Offering over 4,300 slot machines and 174 table games, Maryland Live made the biggest profit: an impressive $52.5 million.

Could online gambling be the answer?

When it comes to gambling, the state of Maryland is in direct competition with New Jersey and Delaware, both of which have legalized online casinos. With the state’s land-based casino profits going down, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if local authorities considered allowing online gambling sites in the US state of Maryland.

Earlier in 2013, representatives of the Maryland gambling authority said they’d be keeping their eyes on the New Jersey online gambling market, to see how things evolve. Ever since online casinos went live in New Jersey, at the end of November, the number of new accounts opened has been increasing.
