This Week in Pictures: August 8 – 14, 2017

There was a non-stop supply of big news stories last week so in case you missed any lets take a quick glance at some of the most important.

In the Pacific the 45th President Donald Trump forcefully advised North Korea to cease threatening America promising “Fire & Fury” in response, clarifying later that military options were “locked and loaded”. The president also reassured Guam of America’s continued protection, the small island nation a target of North Korean aggression and a strategically essential US Airbase in the region. North Korea has promised further tests in its missile development program, including some in the waters off Guam.

In Kenya Raila Odinga lost his challenge to wrest power from President Uhuru Kenyatta, however in the wake of the vote accused the election of having been hacked, despite international observers stating they saw no evidence of wrongdoing during the voting. Mr Kenyatta got 54.2% of the vote with Mr Odinga getting just 44.9%. In the violence that followed the result 24 people died with the capital Nairobi the scene of many violent clashes between supporters of the opposition and the authorities.

In the USA last week an unwelcome far-right/nazi rally in Charlotteville North Carolina ended in tragedy when a counter-protester was deliberately hit by a car that sped at a gathered crowd. Driven by white supremacist James Alex Fields the car killed Heather Heyer and injured another 19 people. Fields was arrested at the scene. The far-right rally was thwarted when counter protesters forced them from their chosen location. Two policemen also died the same day in an unrelated helicopter crash.

In sports Usain Bolt bowed out of international athletics with a final appearance at the World Championships in London. Unable to win, and pulling up short in his last race injured this wasn’t the fabulous farewell he might have wished for but the legend of running was greeted rapturously by fans, which only leaves one question; What will he do with his retirement? Meanwhile scientists revealed last week how they had made a stunning new discovery under the massive Antarctic ice sheet finding some new potentially geo-thermal landscape features, or, as we call them, volcano. Not satisfied with locating one or two they actually found over ninety and may now have to rank it as the highest density of volcano in the world. With nearly 100 new volcano the question quickly becomes how active they are, something the University of Edinburgh intends to find out.
