This Week in Pictures: September 5th – 9th

There was no shortage of big news stories last week so we take another glance at the stories from around the world that hit the headlines.

In the United States both of the Presidential hopefuls, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, attended a commemoration of the 2001 September 11th attacks at Ground Zero last week. Almost 3,000 people died in the attacks on New York with nearly as many dying since then due to related causes. Just fifty-eight days before the election both candidates were careful not to be seen turning the fifteenth anniversary of the tragedy into a political vehicle, although Hillary left unceremoniously in one after falling ill.

In Saudi Arabia the annual Hajj pilgrimage reached its height last week as Ramadan came to an end across the Muslim world. With up to two million pilgrims visiting Mecca for one of the five pillars of Islam, central observances of the Muslim faith. Authorities were keen to stress the efforts made in order to avoid a repeat of the tragedy in 2015 that saw between 750 and 2,000 people crushed in surging crowds. Pilgrims at this years Hajj were equipped with electronic tags to monitor crowd flow in the city.

In Syria a cease fire became a possibility following a tentative peace arrangement was arrived at between the United States and Russia which agreed to have hostilities suspended within days. The deal was announced by Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, and John Kerry, US Secretary of State following a marathon 13 hour negotiation session in Geneva. Coinciding with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha the temporary halt to the fighting will allow distribution of humanitarian aid in the country.

In sport the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio got under way with athletes from sixty four nations classified with various disabilities competing for the famous gold, silver and bronze medals, the only question now is which nation will come top of the table when the games are done? You’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out if anyone can beat the dominant Chinese team’s score, but in the meantime here’s a look at some of the big news stories we covered from around the world last week.

Meanwhile, in deep space, the Philae lander, send on a mission in 2014 to land on comet 67P (also known as Churyumov-Gerasimenko) has been found after going dead after just sixty hours on the icy rock surface. The Rosetta probe, orbiting the body, sent back high-resolution pictures of the lander in a ditch that cast shadows that prevented the lander’s solar panels recharging. The Rosetta probe itself will be deliberately crashed into 67P on September 30th this year as the mission comes to an end.
