Will we see a Copa versus Euros clash of the continents? South American football officials have suggested it will happen!
If you like to bet on sports, there may be an upcoming event that will attract your attention! The president of CONMEBOL, the governing body responsible for South American football, has suggested that there should be a Copa versus Euros play-off sometime this year!
While Chile are already confirmed as the champions of the Copa America Centenario, Euro 2016 is yet only at the semi-final stage. However, a clash of Chile versus either Germany, France, Portugal, or Wales, would surely excite fans. CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez claimed via his twitter account, “We have received a positive response from UEFA about a match between the Copa America and Euro Champions”, adding that “We will study a viable date to set.”
Match could be one of several upcoming Copa versus Euros clashes
The biggest problem regarding any Copa versus Euros winners clash is that of scheduling. Finding a free day for some of the world’s best players to perform is problematic, and that’s without considering that for the match to be anything other than a glorified friendly players would need time to train together beforehand. It seems that officials are confident of finding time, though.
However, as great as a Copa versus Euros meetings would be, it won’t be the only time the teams meet in the near future. March 2018 will see the reinstatement of the Artemio Franchi trophy, held in Milan. His will feature the finalists of both the 2016 Copa America Centenario and Euro 2016. Named after formed UEFA president Franchi, it has only been held twice before: in 1985 and 1993. France won the first competition, while Argentina won in 1993, though it took penalties against Denmark.
The teams could even face each other in the 2017 Confederations Cup, held in Russia as a precursor to 2018’s World Cup. There will though be two groups of four teams, featuring Germany as World Cup winners and Russia as hosts. Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico, will also feature as winners of international tournaments.
Whether or not there is a Copa versus Euros clash at the Confederations Cup, there will be plenty exciting international football in the next few years for those who like to bet on sports in the EU. And there’s still three matches left at Euro 2016 to decide who is the best in Europe!
