We all know who the best football players in the world are, but do we know those footballers who play poker?
GamingZion aimed to collect the most important footballers who play poker in the most successful way. Check out the most famous and the best poker players in the world. Who knows, you might even end up challenging some of them while playing online poker! Let’s see the most important professional footballers who play poker.
1. Neymar Jr.
- Real v Barca rivalry, out of football as well
- C. Ronaldo and Neymar, PokerStars Ambassadors
- Piqué is frequent EPT participant
Barcelona’s Brazilian boy is basically an Ambassador for PokerStars. He actually plays poker when he has some free time, and he does it pretty good. His biggest reported poker win was €17,810. He earned that money as he was dealt a Royal Flush, which is, as we all know, something for which your odds are not too great.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
Just like his Brazilian rival, the Portuguese crack is another Ambassador of the popular online poker rooms. He is one of the most famous football players who play poker and he is one of the most successful one as well. The Iberian crack – together with Neymar – promotes PokerStar events and tournaments. It’s worth checking out the PokerStars Review too, if you want more information about them!
3. Gerard Piqué
Not everyone know it about him, but Barcelona’s center back is not only a great defender, but also a huge fan of poker. He is a constant member at EPT Barcelona and he even has good chances of winning. At least we know that he has nothing to worry about after his retirement from the football world. Play poker and get free tickets to Shakira’s concerts, what else would you need?
4. Gianluigi Buffon
Gianluigi Buffon is another one of the great football players who play poker. The Italian goalkeeper joined PokerStars Team a while ago. If you often play online poker at PokerStars, you might end up facing him under the nickname “gigibuffon”! You have better chances of defeating him in poker than scoring a goal against him…
5. Teddy Sheringham
Teddy Sheringham is also one of the most famous poker player footballers. Well, former-footballers as he retired in 2008. That’s when his poker career started. He can be proud of both his statistics: He’s one of the top scorers in the history of the Premier League and he is a notable figure in the poker world as well. His greatest achievement was his 5th place in EPT Vilamoura, earning him €93,121.
6. Ronaldo
- Golden Ball winners also enjoy a bit of poker!
- Ronaldo is one of the most famous PokerStars members
- Shevchenko likes to play poker for charity
Ronaldo is regarded as one of the best strikers in the history of football. The Brazilian legend is also a member at PokerStars and he plays poker pretty well. The same night when Cristiano Ronaldo won his third Ballon d’Or, Ronaldo was participating in a PokerStars event in the Bahamas. And he won big! He collected $42,180 by the end of the day. Great football player, great poker player…What else is he talented at?
7. Andriy Shevchenko
We will not see Andriy Shevchenko any time soon in any high-rollers or main events in any poker tournaments in the near future: the former Ukrainian superstar himself stated that he loves playing poker, but only with friends. He prefers not to gamble and will not play for money. However, he did participate in a charity event together with Ronaldo, Nadal and even Daniel Negreanu.
8. Tony Cascarino
Tony Cascarino is also a favourite candidate at US poker rooms. The retired football player plays poker in a semi-professional level and he hosts radio shows where he is the poker expert. Cascarino won over GPB 500,000. His football career was memorable too: He played for Ireland and participated in the World Cup in 1990 as well as 1994. Cascarino played for several British clubs, including Celtic and Chelsea.
9. Tomas Brolin
Tomas Brolin used to play for the Swedish national team and AC Parma, where he was the most successful. He was young when he had to retire due to a bad injury, but he didn’t quit the sport world completely: he took up poker instead, and he has been practicing ever since. Brolin won GBP 4,700 in EPT Prague Main Event in 2007, but the following year was also beneficial for him: he won GBP 38,000 in EPT Monte Carlo.
10. Jan Molby
Jan Molby is not among the most famous football players who ever existed, although he wasn’t bad. The Danish played for Ajax and Liverpool, among others. He was a central midfielder as a footballer. After his retirement, he took up poker as his new way to make money, and he did it well enough: he earned thousands of US Dollars on live poker games.
11. Jan Vang Sorensen
To add to the list of not-so-very-well-known footballers who play poker, we must mention Jan Van Sorensen’s name. His most important club was Odense BK, however, he had to retire at the age of 30 due to a grave knee injury. Soon enough, he decided to become a professional poker player instead. Not much problem for an injured knee anyways. He even participated and won some rounds in the World Series of Poker!
12. Christian Vieri
- Italian footballers love poker!
- Vieri never went professional poker player
- Totti was PartyPoker Ambassador
Christian Vieri’s name must sound familiar to many football enthusiasts. He was one of the most popular Italian strikers in the 1990s, 2000s. Apart from Atletico Madrid, he played for Inter, Milan as well as Juve, among many other clubs. He never became professional poker player but his enthusiasm towards the game is unquestionable.
13. Francesco Totti
The next person on our list of footballers who play poker is another Italian, who is probably an ever greater legend than Christian Vieri is. Francesco Totti spent his entire career at AS Roma and became one of the greatest Italian players of all time. Not many knows that he has other favourite sports as well. He was Ambassador of Party Poker Italy back in 2010 as a way of expressing his love for the card game.
14. Max Kruse
Max Kruse is Vfl Wolfsburg’s striker at the moment, however he used to play for several German clubs before. Kruse participated in the World Series of Poker in 2015 and won a great amount of money. Although he couldn’t be happy with it for too long: his cash reward got stolen the very same night and has never been returned to him. What a great misery, he has to starve on his salary as a professional Bundesliga player!
