Hungary had its own representation at the final table of anniversary Sunday Million tournament at Poker Stars.
Last Sunday the 5 year anniversary of Poker Stars’ Sunday Million, the biggest weekly tournament among online poker sites, was held. The tourney promised never before seen prizes and a record number of participants. With buy-in at $215, and a long list of satellites, the tournament produced close to 60,000 participants, bringing the total prize pool to nearly $12 million.
The longest surviving Hungarian player was “guccyka”, ending up at the final table. After the exhausting thirteen hours of play, the final table participants agreed a deal to divide the winnings according to chip count. Thus the last standing “Magyar”, working as a security guard in civil life, scooped fourth place and $411,090 with it. After another hour and a half of play, the Lamborghini Gallardo, an additional prize for the 1st place, went to American, “Bdbeatslayer”, along with the official first place title.
The Hungarian poker player – ‘guccyka’ – along with his fellow Hungarian compatriots, unfortunately are unable to enjoy playing poker in Hungary. After recent changes in Hungarian gambling laws, the number of licensed poker rooms drastically diminished. Players now have a choice to either play at a handful of official places or go to private poker establishments, where cash games and tournaments are run illegally.
Many enthusiasts of the game, chose instead to play online poker in Hungary. Unfortunately Hungarian banks refuse to process transactions directly connected to online gambling establishments. Players circumvent this problem by using third party payment methods so they can play this skills based game without the interference from nosy politicians.
