Audi debut in Formula 1: A full works team from the start

Last August, Audi announced that their team would enter F1 as an engine supplier, sparking discussions among F1 fans and bookies at online gambling sites in Germany. This announcement coincided with new regulations emphasizing increased electric power and entirely sustainable fuels. Alfa Romeo ceased their title sponsorship with Sauber after the 2023 season, before Audi’s entry. Sauber will continue to utilize Ferrari power units until the end of 2025, after which they will switch to Audi power for the subsequent season.

The German automaker stated that Sauber, currently operating under the Kick banner, will become their “strategic ally” for their F1 venture, with plans to acquire a stake in the Sauber Group. Last week, the news arrived that Audi finalized a purchase of a 100% Sauber stake instead of 75%, as reported before. This shows the commitment on Audi’s side that they are ready to venture into the unforgiving world of F1. Previously, there have been several examples of failed works team projects, namely Toyota (aka the most expensive failure in F1) and BMW, who despite successful 2007 and 2008, performed poorly in 2009 and retired their project from F1 entirely. Audi will hope that their project will be as profitable as Mercedes or Aston Martin.

Audi will develop its power unit at its Neuburg base in Germany, where over 120 personnel are already engaged in the project. Meanwhile, Sauber will handle the design and production of its racing car at its headquarters in Switzerland and manage race operations. Audi has outlined plans to expand its Neuburg facility in terms of staffing, infrastructure, and physical space, aiming for completion by mid-2024. They aim to conduct initial tests of the 2026 power unit in an F1 test car by 2025.

Who is going to drive for Audi in 2026?

Esteban Ocon
