Brazilian Volleyball Super League Serie A Betting Guide: An Introduction
The Super League is the top tier of professional volleyball in Brazil. Organized by the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation, it was created in 1946. Before the formation of the league, there were only state volleyball competitions, and because of the large distances and difficult transportation methods, there was no national league.
The predecessor to the Brazilian super league was the Guarani Trophy of Champion clubs which was held in 1962. The event was solely played by professional teams, so many teams were left out of the roster. There were two more events, the Brazilian Championship of Champion Clubs, which was held in 1964, and the Brazilian Trophy which was held in 1968. The Brazilian Trophy only included the teams from Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, and the event lasted until 1975.
In 1976, the championship was opened to amateur clubs, allowing many more teams to join the roster and thus making the event a national competition. The new competition was rebranded as the Brazilian Championship and was held every second year. In 1980, the championship was restructured and became an annual event.
In 1994, the tournament went through another restructuring and was named the Brazilian National Super League. In 2011, the league was split into two divisions, the Serie A and Serie B. The two teams that finish at the bottom of the table after the regular season are relegated to the Serie B, being replaced by the winners and runners up of the Serie B league.
At the end of the regular season, the top 8 teams in the Serie A are promoted to the playoff rounds. These are played in an elimination round format, finishing with the finals that are a best of three series. The winner of the finals is crowned the Super League Champion.
Brazilian Volleyball Super League Serie A Betting Guide – How to Bet
To Win
A bet can be placed on a team to win the game. These are two-way bets, where there will be odds given for either team, with lower odds for the house favorite.
By Sets
Volleyball games are usually played in sets of best of five. This means that games can last three sets or go up to a maximum of five. There are bets that can be placed on which team to win a certain set, which can potentially pay out quicker than game bets.
Handicap Bets
When the odds on the winner are too low, or the risk for placing a bet against the favourite is too high, then the handicap bets are a good alternative to find the right odds for the right level of risk. Handicap bets are the same as bets placed on teams to win, but positive or negative handicaps that adjust the odds to risk ratio. Commonly, punters will place a bet on the favourite with a negative handicap, such as -2.5, this will mean that the favourite should win the set or game by 3 points for the bet to win.
The odds offered for the handicap bet will be significantly higher than the to win alternative. Also, punters may put a bet against the favourite with a positive handicap. What this does is make it easier for the weaker side to win the bet, if a positive handicap of +2.5 is set, they will have to either win the game or not lose by more than 2 points for the bet to pay.
Over/Under Bets
This betting market has many different options. The bets do not relate directly to the full time result, but instead focus on aspects of each game.
These can be the total number of points scored at the end of the game, the number of goals scored by one team, points scored after the first or second set and so on.
Over/under bets are two way bets where a value, such as number of points scored, is presented and there is a bet for the game to finish with less than the presented number, and a bet for the game to finish with more than the presented number. In each category, there are usually more than one bet available, so for a bet such as total number of points scored in a game, there may be two way bets for over/under 175.5, 178.5, 179.5 and so on.
Player specials
For some games that have stand out players, there may be bets on a single player’s performance. These may include how many points the player scores in during the game or during a set and so on. These are a great way for fans to back their favourite players.
Many more bets
There are many more bets available for punters looking for more specific bets or bets with higher odds. There are specific bets such as a team to win after losing the first two sets, whether a set will have an even or odd number of points and more.
There are also a number of bets that can potentially offer far higher odds, when several criteria are combined. Bets can be placed on first set winner and match winner, whether the game will go to the fourth set or to the fifth set, for a team to win the set with the correct score and for a team to win a set with a specific margin. These bets are far harder to predict and may require some research before placing any money.
Good knowledge of how both teams play, and specially focusing on head-to-head matches, which team has home advantage, if there are any injured players on either team or more. Should a punter wish to place one of the special combined bets, they may find potentially huge odds.
