One of the last clay court events, the 2022 Emilia-Romagna Open is held this week, between 26 September – 2 October in Parma, Italy. American Coco Gauff is the defending champion but she won’t compete this time. Unlike the world No7 Maria Sakkari, the top favorite in the 2022 WTA Parma winner odds. But the local favorites Martina Trevisan, Jasmine Paolini, and the 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens can also fight for the trophy.
This is only the second edition of the WTA 250 tournament in Parma after it debuted in the WTA schedule last year. It is played on outdoor clay courts and belongs to the last clay events in the season. The young US talent, and the 2022 French Open finalist, Coco Gauff won the tournament last year.
After she defeated Wang Qiang in the final. None of them will take part in the competition this time, but we can still find some great players on the field. Including world No7 Maria Sakkari, the 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens, and Romanian world No33 Irina-Camelia Begu. But Italian players can also do well on home soil along with other clay specialists.
Sakkari Leads the 2022 WTA Parma Winner Odds
Maria Sakkari had a great start to the season after she reached the final in St Petersburg and in Indian Wells. The 27-year-old Greek player reached her career-high ranking No3 after that. But the rest of her season hasn’t been as successful. Sakkari was knocked out early in all Grand Slam tournaments.
Her best result was getting to the semi-final in Berlin in June. Still, online sportsbooks in Italy offer the smallest odds, 3.60 for her victory in Parma. As a top seed in the tournament, Sakkari will start against qualifier Kateryna Baindl in the first round. And can meet one of her strongest opponents, Sloane Stephens in the semi-final.
The American player won in Mexico in February, which was her first title since 2018. She also reached the quarter-final in the French Open. So the 2017 US Open winner can do well on clay again. She is not among the main favorites though with an odds of 17.00 to get the title.
Unlike Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu who has an odds of 5.60 in the 2022 WTA Parma winner odds. The world No32 also won her first title in five years at the Palermo International, so she must have good memories of the Italian courts. Begu can meet her compatriot, Ana Bogdan in the quarter-final if both of them will get there. Bogdan finished as a runner-up in the Poland Open and has an odds of 10.00 to win her first WTA Tour title now.
Chances of the Italian Players and Other Top Seeds
The second seed of the event, Martina Trevisan produced a brilliant run in this year’s French Open. After she reached her first Grand Slam semi-final. She also won her first WTA Tour title at the 2022 Rabat Grand Prix in Morocco. Another tournament held on clay courts.
Even though the world No27 hasn’t got such results since, she can do well on her favorite surface, in front of the home crowd. She has an odds of 16.00 for victory. Another Italian player, Jasmine Paolini has a similar chance of winning according to online gambling sites in Italy.
Paolini entered the top 50 in the world ranking this year after getting to the semi-final in Palermo and Warsaw. While she also got her first win against a top 10 player in 2022. After defeating Aryna Sabalenka in Indian Wells. Anna Bondar stands only two places behind her, in 52nd place in the world ranking.
The Hungarian player is the fifth seed in this tournament and has an odds of 29.00 for the win. She also plays well on clay and reached the semi-final in Morocco and in Budapest. Bondar can meet Slovenian Tamara Zidansek in the second round, who has an odds of 15.00 on 22Bet to win her second WTA title. She won her first trophy last year, also in a clay-court tournament in Lausanne, making her another favorite of this event.
