Featuring Manchester City, Dortmund, Sevilla, and Copenhagen, Group G isn’t exactly made up of Champions League dynasties. But times change, and these teams showcased incredible talent in the past. Join us for our 2023 UCL Group G predictions to see each club’s chances of reaching the Round of 16.
Group G of this year’s Champions League features some heavy hitters, including title favourites Manchester City. The Citizens constantly give in great performances but they always fall before the end. Interestingly enough, Dortmund’s 1996/97 title is the only Champions League trophy from this group. In the following sections, we will detail each club’s chances of making it past the group stage. We also shared our predictions for the final Group G standings.
Early predictions for the final 2023 Group G standings
To no one’s surprise, Manchester City are predicted to win Group G of the 2023 UCL. They’re ranked as the strongest club across Europe’s top five leagues. City’s deadly attacking is hard to withstand and we think they have a high chance to go for the full 18 points at this stage. In the second place, we have Dortmund, who will look to overcome their mistakes from last season. After six games, the Germans will likely qualify with 10-12 points.
Sevilla are a great club but not this season. Their struggles are alarming and in their current form, there’s no way they make it to the Round of 16. On a good day, they’ll finish 3rd with 6 points. Copenhagen are heavily outmatched in Group G but they could pull off a couple of surprises. Although their chances are a bit worse than Sevilla’s so we predict the Danish to finish with 4 or 5 points.
Manchester City are the clear favourites in their group
Manchester City were the favourites to win the UCL this season, and not much has changed since then. After a month or so since the previous predictions, the Citizens still sit at the top of the power rankings. Check out our 2023 UCL betting predictions to see how the title race stands now. The English champions cruised past Sevilla with ease as they won their Matchday 1 game 4-0. City are going all in this season to try to win their first-ever UCL title.
On 888sport, the odds of Guardiola’s team winning Group G are 1/10. We don’t believe there’s anyone who could challenge City’s claim for the 1st spot in their group. The Citizens are not only the favourites to win the tournament but their no. 9, Haaland is also on a path to becoming the top goalscorer this season. Erling Haaland has scored a brace in City’s first group stage match. He also became the youngest player of all time to reach 25 goals in the competition. And he set this record in 20 appearances.
Despite losing Haaland, Dortmund might have improved this season
Dortmund had a disastrous Champions League last season as they fell out of the competition in the group stage. They had 9 points, the same as 2nd placed Sporting, but were behind on goal difference. Haaland, now at City, had his share of injuries last season. Dortmund’s offence was concentrated on the Norwegian striker and his absence led to failures in the Champions League, Europa League, and the Bundesliga as well. The German club have been performing fairly well this season so far.
Dortmund play better at home and they showcased this in their 3-0 victory over Group G rivals Copenhagen. Being in the same group as Man City can be discomforting but Dortmund have a good chance of making it to the Round of 16 this year. Online sportsbook sites in the UK favour them over Sevilla and Copenhagen. Their odds to win their group are 11/2. Two seasons ago, BVB reached the quarter-finals so we certainly expect them to qualify for the next stage of the tournament.
Sevilla are digging their own grave – 2023 UCL Group G predictions
From what we’ve seen so far, Sevilla are nowhere near the level they were a few seasons ago. In the past three seasons, they finished 4th in LaLiga. During their 2017/18 UCL campaign, they went to the quarter-finals. However, last season they only won one group stage game and failed to qualify for the Round of 16. And based on their recent performances, they might be even worse off this year. In five matches between 12 August and 10 September, Sevilla only won one match, which was a 3-2 away game against Espanyol.
As of 14 September, Sevilla are 16th in LaLiga and the 2023 UCL Group G predictions aren’t in their favour either. On 888sport, their odds of finishing 1st in their group are 25/1. They’re not in the toughest group this year but we don’t think they can finish higher than City or Dortmund. If they don’t find some solutions quickly, they could even miss out on the Europa League transfer as well. With how things stand now, we don’t think Sevilla will see much improvement before the January transfer window.
Copenhagen should aim for that Europe League transfer
Out of their 16 appearances, including this year, Copenhagen have made it to the group stage or further only five times. Their best achievement was reaching the Round of 16 in the 2010/11 season. And while we saw some shocking upsets in this competition from the likes of Dinamo Zagreb or Shakhtar Donetsk, the chances of the Danish advancing are low. Online sportsbooks in the UK predict Copenhagen to finish bottom of their group.
The problem is that Copenhagen are struggling a bit even in the Danish Superligaen. Out of 9 matches so far, they’ve lost 5. And Dortmund beating them 3-0 was another reminder of where their chances are. Now, with Sevilla’s struggles this season, Copenhagen could aim for a 3rd place finish in Group G. It’s entirely possible and in the following weeks, we will see just how badly damaged Sevilla are. So no, Copenhagen will not reach the Round of 16 this season but they could get a transfer to the Europa League.
