After the men’s and women’s road race at the weekend, the road cycling events will continue with the time trial races at the 2020 Olympics. In the men’s event Wout van Aert is the top favorite but several time trial specialists will go for the gold. Anna van der Breggen only finished 15th on Sunday. But she can try to get a better result now according to the Olympic time trial winner odds.
Time trial and road race events were held in turns in the history of the Olympic Games until 1996 when both events became a part of the program. The women’s time trial race was also held first in 1996 and has been organized ever since. Swiss Fabian Cancellara and Russian Viatcheslav Ekimov could win the Olympic title twice. Cancellara is also the defending champion but he retired in 2016, so we will definitely see a new winner now. In the women’s event American Kristin Armstrong won the title in three consecutive Olympics between 2008 and 2016. She also retired after her third victory at the age of 43. Both events will be held this Wednesday on the same route including the Fuji International Speedway. The men’s field will do two laps though on the length of 44,2 km. While the women’s race is 22,1 km long.
Olympic time trial winner odds for the men’s event
Wout van Aert finished second on the road race here, in Tokyo but will aim for the gold in the time trial race. Online sportsbooks in Belgium predict his victory with the odds of 2.50. It’s not surprising at all after the fantastic season van Aert has been having so far. He won one-day classics, stages in this year’s Tour de France including the individual time trial. And now the silver in the Olympics after a great sprint finish. The Belgian cyclist seems to be great in all kinds of events including the time trial race. He got the silver in last year’s time trial world championship, finishing behind Filippo Ganna.
The Italian cyclist can be his biggest rival again and has odds of 4.00 to get the gold. Ganna won two time-trial stages in this year’s Giro d’Italia. But he only finished 4th in the National Championships last month. Another cyclist to look out for is Australian Rohan Dennis, who is a two-time world champion. He skipped the road race on Saturday to focus on the time-trial race. Where his odds are 5.50 to get the gold medal. Olympic time trial winner odds also mention Primoz Roglic in the favorites. But the Slovenian’s current state is still in question after his crash in the Tour de France. Just like Remco Evenepoel’s form. Who won the silver in the 2019 World Championship but suffered a big crash last season.
Favorites in the women’s race
Cycling fans could witness one of the biggest surprises of the season in the women’s Olympic road race on Sunday. After Austrian Anna Kiesenhofer won the gold ahead of all major favorites. Now the Dutch cyclists can try again and get the win in this event. First of all we have to mention Anna van der Breggen, who is a four-time Giro d’Italia Femminile winner. She also won the time trial world championship in 2020 after her big rival, American Chloe Dygart crashed during the race. Van der Breggen got the bronze medal in the previous Games in Rio, now she has the odds of 2.00 to get the gold.
But online gambling sites in Belgium offer very similar odds for the victory of Dygart. The US cyclist won the world championship in 2019 but hasn’t raced too much since. But she did win the national championship a few weeks ago. Another Dutch athlete, Annemiek van Vleuten will also race for the gold medal. She got the silver in the road race though she was slightly disappointed after some confusion over the race order. Now the two-time world champion and Giro winner has the odds of 5.50 to become Olympic champion. While Swiss Marlen Reusser can also win the race after finishing as a runner-up in last year’s world championship. Even though her victory has much higher odds (23.00) on bet365.
